  • West worker's DWI charge dismissed

Prosecutors have dismissed a DWI charge against a West Las Vegas school district employee who crashed a district vehicle while allegedly drunk.

In late April, the district attorney’s office in Moriarty dropped the DWI charge against John J. Roybal, 41, West’s head mechanic. But in a plea agreement, Roybal pleaded guilty to careless driving and weaving between lanes.

As part of the deal, Roybal must take a defensive driving course and participate in a DWI simulation program.

  • Taking it home

Staying patient on offense, manufacturing runs with a steady hand and — most of all — clamping down on defense, the Athletics concluded a strong campaign Saturday with a 7-2 victory over the Yankees in the La Plaza majors title game.

The final pitted the division’s top two squads against one another for a third time this season. (They’d split their two regular-season games, each winning by two runs.)

The Yankees had the sticks going early and took a 2-1 lead after Robert Gallegos’ score in the top of the second.

  • A's get last laugh in softball

With just two teams in La Plaza’s softball division, there wasn’t much mystery as to who would meet in the final on Saturday morning.

But given the competitiveness of both the A’s and Marlins — not to mention the one-run difference between them in their most recent meeting — there wasn’t a clear favorite going into the championship game.

Eighteen proposed bylaw changes are on the ballot for the more than 10,000 members of the cooperative. Voting sites will be in Mora, Pecos and Las Vegas.

An armed man involved in a domestic dispute barricaded himself in his house for much of early Saturday morning, finally giving up shortly after dawn, city police said. No one was hurt.

Between New Mexico Avenue and South Pacific Street, a narrow Socorro Street was filled with about 20 to 30 police cars from 12:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
