  • Local man faces seventh DWI charge

    A Las Vegas man whose breath alcohol content was more than 2- 1/2 times the state’s presumed level of intoxication was arrested earlier this month on his seventh drunken driving charge, according to court documents.

    Leonard R. Montoya, 45, of the 1000  block of Tilden, has been charged with aggravated DWI, seventh offense, a third-degree felony, and with misdemeanor counts of driving with a suspended or revoked license, driving with an open container, making an improper turn at an intersection and failing to stay in his lane.

  • NM retiree authority mulls health benefit changes

    SANTA FE — The New Mexico Retiree Health Care Authority is considering setting a minimum retirement age before health care subsidies become available, joining the state’s two pension funds in broaching the subject as a way to cut costs.

    The authority now subsidizes monthly insurance premiums for those who retire from state and local government and public school systems. It provides benefits for about 50,000 retirees, their spouses and dependents.

    Suspected sex offender arrested  
    SANTA TERESA, N.M.  — A suspected child-sex offender has been apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol agents in New Mexico.

    Authorities say 28-year-old Erick Daniel Garcia-Garcia will be extradited to Colorado to face charges in that state.

    Border Patrol officials say Garcia-Garcia was taken into custody early Sunday while agents assigned to the Santa Teresa Station were working in the Sunland Park area.

  • Suggestions for reducing trash this holiday season

    Americans generated 250 million tons of trash in 2010 (US EPA), which translates to 4.43 pounds per person per day.  If we isolate the holiday season, this daily average would be much higher, considering that Americans generate an additional five million tons of waste from Thanksgiving to New Years. Of that, four million tons come from shopping bags and wrapping paper.

    Start off your holiday season on a green foot by making a few small changes.
