  • Weekend Roundup - Lady Cards rock Tigers

A 4-0 shutout of visiting Taos this past Thursday gave the Robertson girls’ soccer team an important win over a chief district rival.

“As expected, it was an extremely competitive battle between the two teams,” said RHS head coach Ian Williamson.

After allowing two goals in the first eight minutes, Taos put up a fight, with a physical, hard-playing defense funneling the ball upfield.

But the Lady Cardinals were ready, and goalkeeper Ashley Jaramillo was credited with 12 saves while preserving a shutout.

  • HU runners: Dual wins in Oklahoma

Racing at the Oklahoma Panhandle Open on Saturday, both the New Mexico Highlands men and women took team titles at the same meet for the first time in several years.

A challenging course and temperatures in the 30s “brought out the best” in the NMHU runners, said assistant coach Joe Quintana. Both teams swept the top three individual places on the way to winning the first-ever college cross country meet at Oklahoma Panhandle.

  • Editor's Note - Defining the center

Here’s my take on the political center, which is a mighty important place to be this year, since a relative handful of independent moderates are going to decide the presidential election.

    You’re in the center if:
    • You believe in government, under restraints. You think government should be smaller in its size and scope, but it should also be big enough to look out for and respond to citizens’ needs. You realize that government is sometimes part of the problem, but you also know it’s the solution from time to time.
