  • Pueblo to host NCAAs

    The National Collegiate Athletics Association has selected Colorado State University-Pueblo as the host site for the 2012 and 2013 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The events will take place May 24-26, 2012, and May 23-25, 2013, at the Neta & Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl.

  • Red Sox, Lady Devils back in LVLL finals

    Avoiding the short end of the 10-run rule that has claimed so many other opponents of the Red Sox this season, the Mets put up a good fight Wednesday night in Las Vegas Little League Majors Division semifinal action at Keyes Park.

    The top-seeded Red Sox won 9-4, advancing to Saturday morning’s championship game. They’ll play the winner of a Friday evening semifinal between the Cardinals and Yankees.

    Richard Armijo, D.J. Abreu and Jeremy Fernandez scored in each of the first two innings Wednesday to lead the Sox to a 9-0 advantage.

  • Several locals brave triathlon

    Several Las Vegans and others with strong ties to the area were among the competitors in this past weekend’s Storrie Lake Triathlon.

    The event, which returned after a four-year absence, began with a swim of nearly 1 mile in the lake, followed by a 24-mile cycling segment to Sapello and back and then a 6-mile run from the lake through the Porkchop Hill area.

    Clay Moseley of Los Alamos was the overall winner, finishing in 2 hours, 14 minutes, 24 seconds.

    The City of Las Vegas is holding a family golf camp for the community during the month of July.

    The camp is designed for parents and their children to get out on the range and enjoy the game of golf. Sessions will cover fundamentals, use of irons and drivers, putting, chipping and full swing.

    Sessions are scheduled for July 6, July 13, July 20 and July 27. Each session will be from 5 to 7 p.m.

    Camp cost is $65 for two; $15 each additional person.

    Children are not required to have their own clubs to participate.

  • Mora County Notebook: Mora Lakers win tournament

    Three of Mora’s young athletes came home champions of the 3-on-3 tournaments called “Hoop It Up” that took place at the Civic Plaza in Albuquerque recently. The tourney was held on an outdoor court in the civic center with 100- degree temperature. The Mora Lakers won six consecutive games to claim the championship.
