  • Local fans can see top athletes in action

    It’s North-South week in Las Vegas, and that means local fans will have one last chance to see some of the Class of 2010’s premier athletes in action before they leave their high school heroics in the rear-view mirror.

    A week full of practices and activities culminates with the Class 3A girls’ and boys’ basketball games beginning at 5 p.m. Friday at the Wilson Complex, followed by the Class 3A football game kicking off at 6 on Saturday evening at Perkins Stadium.

    I’m angry. I’m angry at the depth and breadth of the hypocrisy exposed by this Val Kilmer “issue.” What happened to the “clear and present danger” that could have affected the county’s health and safety county attorney Jesus Lopez advised would result if the commission approved Mr. Kilmer’s application?

  • Fiesta-fun weekend

    Raton native Andrew Padilla barely noticed his sunburn Saturday afternoon while he was at Fiestas de Las Vegas. He said he was having such a good time.

    “This is awesome, seeing all the vendors and entertainment,” Padilla said.

    Many out-of-towners plan their vacations around the Fourth of July, so they can join the many events surrounding the fiestas. Others come home to see family and friends, which makes it a good time for class reunions.

  • County looking at tax hike

    San Miguel County is poised to ask voters to raise the countywide sales tax.

    Officials said the tax would pay for the operation of an emergency communications center, emergency medical services and the provision of behavioral health services, including alcohol and drug abuse treatment.

    The tax would amount to one-fourth of 1 percent of the amount of purchases — or 25 cents for every $100. It is expected to raise $900,000 annually.

  • As It Is: Let’s not deny the truth

    Recently, the Las Vegas Council passed a resolution condemning the new law in Arizona requiring police officers to check the immigration status of anyone they stop or detain whom they suspect is in the United States illegally.

    Will this lead to racial profiling? Many believe it will; I’m with them.

  • Letter: No authority to write that way

    It is very obvious you (editor Tom McDonald) have not sacrificed for our area, or our country either, and you are obviously not Hispanic. So, who are you to say “We say it’s time to move on.”  Who is “we,” pale face? What insult did you suffer?

    Kilmer did not apologize to any of the parties he insulted. Most of our county commissioners are not even veterans — certainly not Les Montoya, Jesus Lopez or Nick Leger, either — all at our expense!

  • Minors Sox clinch title in LVLL finale

    The streak. The championship. The glory of being the last team standing in Las Vegas Little League as the Fourth of July weekend 2010 got under way.

    The LVLL minors division Red Sox claimed all of that on Friday evening at Keyes Park by beating the rival Cardinals 13-3 in the last Little League game to be played in town this summer.

    Attention now turns to the district all-star tournaments, which begin Saturday in Raton. Local all-star teams have been practicing the last couple weeks around the city.
