  • Forty-nine cents can be a half dollar

    A penny was a lot in my youth. As a child, I used to count each one, hoping the number would increase.

    Something like that happened when I was around 10 and considered myself the Rockefeller of Railroad Avenue. I was one of zillions of Optic sellers. If I sold 10 copies each day, I’d go home expecting some car company to have delivered my brand new Lamborghini.

  • Dons, Lady Cards returning to state XC meet

    Robertson’s girls and West Las Vegas’ boys punched return tickets to this coming Saturday’s state cross country championships thanks to top-three team finishes in the district meet Friday in Santa Fe.

    The Lady Cardinals, coached by Patrick Garcia, landed five in the top 16 to come away with second place in the girls’ race.

  • Beasties joining party in Bernalillo

    Robertson High School is looking to make double trouble for opponents in the state soccer tournaments.

    On Saturday, the RHS girls’ team — who got into the Class 1A-4A girls’ bracket as the No. 10 seed — stunned No. 7 Taos on the road in a 2-0 shutout in the opening round.

    That gives the Lady Cardinals, AKA Beastie Girls, a trip to the quarterfinals Thursday at the Bernalillo Soccer Complex. They will face No. 2 seed Bosque (14-4-2) for a spot in the final four. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. at Field 7.

  • NMHU roundup: RMAC-leading Mavs ride early lead to rout

    New Mexico Highlands and host Colorado Mesa — the top team in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s football race — both had 14 points in the second half Saturday.

    It was those 63 points in the first half — all scored by the Mavericks — that made the difference.

    The 77-14 defeat is the sixth in a row for the Cowboys and first-year coach Marty Fine.

    Eystin Salum threw four touchdown passes on his way to 299 yards for the Mavericks, and David Tann rushed for three TDs as part of a 167-yard effort.
