  • Weekend scrimmages kick off fall sports slate

    Tired of waiting for the fall sports season to begin?

    If so, you’re not the only one.

    New Mexico Highlands University’s football, women’s soccer and volleyball teams are getting an early jump on the schedule with a triple shot of action this Saturday on campus.

    First up, it’s the NMHU volleyball team hosting an alumni match that brings back some of the program’s former players to the courts of the Wilson Complex. The match starts at 4 p.m.

  • Cowboy Cup golf event Sept. 1-2

    With the Luna Community College Foundation’s golf fundraiser in the books, area linksters have more opportunities to practice their craft while helping generate scholarship money.

    New Mexico Highlands University’s athletic department is hosting the Cowboy Cup Scholarship Golf Tournament next weekend, Sept. 1-2, at the Gene Torres Golf Course.

    The two-day event will be a two-man scramble format with an entry fee of $400 a team. The fee includes greens fees, a cart, three catered meals and a chance to win prizes.

  • Las Vegas lineup earns silver in Senior Olympic volleyball

    Senior Olympian athletes from Las Vegas represented the city at the New Mexico Senior Olympics Volleyball Tournament recently in Rio Rancho.

    The team of eight — dubbed the “Vegas Rough Riders” — played against other co-ed teams from New Mexico, Colorado, Texas and Arizona.

    UNM reporting fewer students
    ALBUQUERQUE — University of New Mexico officials say the number of freshmen and transfer students enrolled this fall is up compared to last year.
    UNM announced some of its fall semester numbers Tuesday. The figures are based on data from the first day of classes, which was Monday.
    Overall enrollment stands at 28,038. That’s down 0.3 percent from last year.

    Suddenly it is summer, and suddenly summer is flying by. I know it must be August because our annual fun filled invasion of our little people has just occurred.         

    Ah, yes, changes are occurring. It is a different world out there to this old lady. The preteen girls sit quietly on the couch, each with an Ipod in hand, playing games while it rains. The rains let up and boom! They are out the door, playing hide-and-seek.
