  • Iconic coach steps down

    After more than three decades in education and coaching, Cindy Roybal is stepping down from her head girls’ basketball coaching post at Santa Fe Indian School.

    “It wasn’t an easy decision; I love these girls,” said Roybal. “Basketball and education have been very good to me, but all good things must come to and end. I look forward to this next chapter in my life and whatever it has in store for me.”

    Charette Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.   
    Cimarron River: Water flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 72 cfs. Trout fishing was good using Panther Martins, elk hair caddis, Cimarron specials, salmon eggs and worms. We had no reports from the Gravel Pit Lakes.

  • Lawsuit filed against jail

    A 69-year-old Las Vegas man suffering from a host of medical ailments is suing San Miguel County after a 30-day stay in the county jail where he alleges he was deprived of his medications and suffered because of it.

    Jerry Coca, of the 300 block of State Road 65 in Las Vegas had pleaded guilty to his third drunken driving offense and was sentenced by former San Miguel Magistrate Philip Romero in October 2011 to 30 days in jail, according to court records.

  • Shooting death ruled suicide

    The state Office of the Medical Investigator has ruled that Adrian Vallejos, 27, of Pecos, committed suicide and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
    Autopsy results from the case were released last week by Amy Boule, director of operations at OMI in Albuquerque.

    Ledoux wildfire contained

    LEDOUX — Crews battling a small wildfire near Ledoux in Mora County have brought it under control.
    New Mexico State Forestry spokesman Dan Ware said Sunday evening that the 11-acre blaze had been contained.
    The fire didn’t pose a threat to buildings but it did prompt the evacuation of an unknown number of campers in the area.
    The fire that started around noon on Sunday and smoldered in grass and heavy timber.

    Top water decision-makers from seven Western states plan to join conservation groups and Indian tribes in San Diego on Tuesday to begin hammering out rules for squeezing every useable drop from the overtaxed Colorado River.
