  • Threat bumps up security at schools

    Las Vegas City Schools and the Las Vegas Police Department beefed up security at Robertson High and Paul D. Henry Elementary on Wednesday due to what school officials called “unsubstantiated rumors of possible violence” at the high school.

    Several schools across the country, including the Albuquerque Public Schools district, took similar steps due to the rumor of an anonymous Facebook message that threatened a shooting at a public school on 12-12-12.

    Friday, Dec. 14 — Help for the Needy Club, with 102 families now listed as in need, has arranged to register more families in need Saturday at the old Armory Building, Mrs. Vicente Armijo announced today. Among the needy families the club is trying to help is a family to be evicted today because they cannot pay their rent. This family consists of a father who recently underwent surgery, a mother who is momentarily expecting another child, and seven children, all under 10 years of age. When visited, the family had no food or heat in the house.

    The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is sponsoring a Winter Solstice Ceremony at 5 p.m. this Sunday at Dwan Light Sanctuary on the United World College - USA campus in Montezuma. The event is open to the public.

  • Couple dies hours apart

    MEYERSDALE, Pa.  — Barry Werner says his mother always put his father first during their 65-year marriage, but that changed earlier this week.

    On Tuesday, LaVerne Werner died at the southwestern Pennsylvania personal care home. About 12 hours later, Robert Werner followed.

    “They did everything together,” Werner told the Tribune-Democrat of Johnstown. “They didn’t always agree with each other, but if one went, the other was going to follow soon.”

  • Free-throw contest scheduled for Sunday at Marr Gym

    Youngsters from the community are invited to take part in a free-throw shooting contest Sunday in town.

    The Las Vegas Elks Lodge Annual Hoop Shoot will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Robertson High School’s Mike Marr Gym.

    The free-throw contest is open to boys and girls, ages 8 to 13. There are six age groups in the competition: boys age 8-9, girls age 8-9, boys age 10-11, girls age 10-11, boys age 12-13 and girls age 12-13.
