  • County gets funds for business

    San Miguel County is set to get $500,000 to construct a building to be used by a local company, which officials say is part of the effort to bolster job-creating businesses.

    The money will pay for a 20,000-square-foot spec building at the wood business park. Once the building is completed, it will be made available through the lease of the building from San Miguel County to Old Wood Products, which is owned by David Old.

  • TRIPP'S TRIPPIN': Recruiters starting earlier and earlier

    I am a big fan of ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” program on Sunday mornings as the show brings up a variety of topics within the sports arena. Recently a show caught my eye about how early college coaches and starting to recruit student-athletes to attend their institutions.

    It was interesting to see that many of these athletes are being recruited before, during and after their freshman year in high school.

  • Las Vegas hires new animal control supervisor

    The new supervisor of the city’s animal shelter says everyone is welcome to visit the animals, spend some time with the ones they may want to adopt and get to know them.

    “I want this to be a friendly place,” Kelly Eversole said. “I could be harder on people about not getting their vaccinations or spaying and neutering, but I would rather help pet owners better understand how to care for the animals.”

  • Rangerettes capture second NRG volleyball title in a row

    Leslie Vigil and her Mora Rangerettes have won their second consecutive championship in the Northern Rio Grande Volleyball Tournament held this past weekend at McCurdy.

    Mora came out of pool play Friday seeded second.

    In round one of the tournament Mora rebounded from a close loss in the first set to defeat Dulce 23-25, 25-13, 25-12, 26-24.

  • Optic opens NFL picks contest to public

    The Optic is inviting you to take part in the free Las Vegas Optic Power Picks contest beginning with this coming week, Week 2 of the NFL season.

    Each week (shortly after the conclusion of Monday Night Football broadcasts) the paper will e-mail participants a copy of the week’s NFL game lineup. Participants are asked to e-mail back with predicted winners; deadline is midnight Wednesday (11:59 p.m. Wednesday).

  • 'Take it like a man'

    Four Robertson High School football players agreed to medical examinations for sexual assault after accusing upperclassmen of sodomizing them with broomsticks during a football training camp last month, state police said.

    The younger players on the team were told to “take it like a man” or “get it 10 times worse later,” state police said in a 102-page report on their investigation released Wednesday by the state Department of Public Safety.

  • City to renovate council chambers

    The City Council decided last week to go ahead with renovating its chambers, but the cost is much higher than originally estimated.

    The council voted 3-1 to enter a $165,000 contract with Franken Construction to expand the chambers and make several improvements. Franken, which gets nearly every local government project, beat two other bidders.

    The contract’s cost is considerably higher than the $20,000 to $30,000 estimated earlier this year.

  • Locals meet would-be first lady

    Las Vegan Natasha Martinez-Padilla says her meeting with Michelle Obama has left a lasting impression. She found the would-be first lady to be warm, caring and down to earth.

    “I could tell you the good things and the bad things about my husband, and she did the same thing. She told us she and Barack are not perfect; they are just like everyone else,” Martinez-Padilla said. “But they are dedicated to the people of the United States, and I think that’s remarkable.”

  • Man accused in attack

    A Las Vegas man was charged with attacking his girlfriend while they were passengers in a moving car, state police said.

    Jerry Joe Martinez, 52, 701 Mora St., was arrested on a single count of battery against a household member. According to state police, an officer saw the two punching each other shortly after 4 p.m. Sept. 1. When the officer stopped the car, he separated Martinez and his girlfriend.

    The alleged victim told officers that Martinez, her boyfriend of five years, had slapped her, state police said. Both appeared intoxicated, according to a police report.

  • Man gets 17 years for murder

    A man convicted of killing another has been sentenced to 17 years in prison, according to the district attorney’s office.

    In June, Frank Lucero was convicted by a San Miguel County jury for second-degree murder and child abuse. Recently, District Judge Eugenio Mathis sentenced Lucero.

    John Gonzales was shot and killed by Lucero on June 3, 2007, at a house on New Mexico Avenue, according to police reports.
