It was her first time running for elected office, and her Republican opponent was a seasoned politician.
To top it off, Laura M. Montoya didn’t even have the hometown advantage. The Las Vegas native was running for treasurer in Sandoval County.
Despite those obstacles, Montoya went to work knocking on doors and courting tribal officials.
The hard work paid off on Election Day, when Montoya, a Democrat, won a four-year term as Sandoval County treasurer.
