  • Cowgirls riding 3-match win streak

    She wasn’t playing blackjack, and she was a long way from Vegas — either one — but Darian Mullen’s 21 proved to be a winning number Saturday night.

    Mullen swatted down 21 kills in a whopping 54 attacks with just six errors for a .278 attack percentage, leading New Mexico Highlands to a 3-2 win at Chadron State this past Saturday in Chadron, Neb.

    The victory extended Highlands’ winning streak to three matches, tying the team’s longest.

  • East music teacher may leave

    Parents and students at Las Vegas City Schools are worried a loss may soon occur at their school district. During a regular board meeting Thursday evening, music director Martin Sena confirmed he has been offered a music director position at Pecos Schools. He said he has not made the decision on whether to stay with the east side district or go to Pecos.

  • High court to hear case on gay marriage

    SANTA FE — Linda Siegle and her partner of 22 years were first in line when the Santa Fe County clerk started to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples in late August.

    Now, she’s waiting to see whether the New Mexico Supreme Court will legalize gay marriage in all of the state’s 33 counties. Eight counties currently allow it.

  • Ulibarri says he’ll run for commission

    A Las Vegas teacher and environmental activist has announced that he will once again run for a seat on the San Miguel County Commission.

    Ulibarri issued a statement to the Optic late Friday afternoon. In it, he said he planned to make the official announcement later that afternoon at the anti-fracking rally at Plaza Park.

    Ulibarri resides in District 1, and that seat is currently held by Commissioner Ron Ortega.
