  • Cowboy runners 18th in nation

Respect for the New Mexico Highlands men’s cross country program recently translated into another milestone — a national ranking.

Highlands’ men earned the No. 18 ranking in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association preseason poll for NCAA Division II, released Aug. 29.

The Cowboys, who made their season debut this past weekend at a University of New Mexico meet, are coached by Bob DeVries, in his 21st year at the helm of both the men’s and women’s teams.

  • Lady Cards break through vs. Mora

Abbey Bradley led an improving Lady Cardinal attack Tuesday night as Robertson swept Mora 3-0 in a meeting of two area teams who have become regulars in the state volleyball tournaments.

It was a breakthrough of sorts for a young RHS squad, which struggled through a defeat against Ruidoso on Saturday.

Bradley, one of just two veterans on the varsity roster, was especially effective. She gave the Rangerettes problems at the net in both offense (five kills) and defense.

  • Lady Dons start 3-0

A four-set road victory Tuesday at St. Michael’s has given the West Las Vegas Lady Dons a 3-0 start to their volleyball season.

The Lady Dons’ early performance has head coach Mary Bustos feeling cautiously optimistic.

“The whole match went very well,” she said. “Honestly, nobody had a bad game. The girls played together and cheered each other on. One key in volleyball is to have everybody having fun and playing together.”

  • Rugged early slate for Cardinal soccer

Wednesday’s 10-0 mercy-rule shutout at Questa was a welcome respite from a tough early schedule for the Robertson boys’ soccer team.

“We have a brutal schedule,” said head coach Clarence Montoya. “We opened up with Sandia Prep, and that’s about the toughest team we play. The next day we should’ve beaten Ruidoso, but we had no legs left. It’s going to take a while to get up to speed.”

  • Palabras Pintorescas - Special forces training fields?

Klunk! That was the noise heard in our forest recently. We all remember the old adage: Does a tree make a noise when it falls if nobody is there to hear it ... only this time, it wasn’t a tree that fell.
