    Las Vegas is in Stage IV water restrictions. Under the restrictions, residents are not allowed to water their lawns at all. At-home car washing is also prohibited. Local car washes may remain open as long as they are using recycled water. Fines range from a warning for a first offense to a $450 fine for a third and subsequent offense.

    TUESDAY MARTES
    • The 2011 Michael William Marr Annual Scholarship will be awarded at the Las Vegas Robertson High School Senior Awards Night Ceremony. Applications must be post-marked no later than May 10. Applications are available from the counselors at Robertson High School. The scholarship has been awarded annually for the past 29 years. Donations to the Marr Scholarship are always accepted and can be made at the Community First Bank in Las Vegas.

  • Ranger Camps taking registrations

    Fort Union National Monument will host two all-day Junior Ranger Camps beginning at 10 a.m. and ending at 4 p.m on Thursday, June 9 and Friday, June 10.

    For children ages 7-12, the camps will introduce youngsters to the diverse history and natural splendor of Fort Union through hands-on games, activities, and ranger led programs. The June 9 Junior Ranger Camp is geared for children ages seven to nine and the June 10th camp is geared for children ages ten to 12. Both camps are free of charge.

  • Publisher's Note: A formidable future

    Do you ever think about the future? Well, don’t dwell on it for too long, or you’ll have to rethink it all over again.

    That’s how fast it’s changing.

    Think of history as a line. Up until modern times, it was pretty much a straight line, in which one event led to another in a relatively predictive manner. Things didn’t always make sense at the time, but they usually did when we looked back on them. The line of knowledge and invention angled upward, but it was still basically a straight line.

  • RHS girls: State champs!

    A dependable player the last four years for the Robertson varsity girls’ tennis program, Miranda Garcia walked away a winner this weekend at the Class A-3A state championships. So did all her teammates.

    Garcia on Friday evening stopped Paloma Gomez of St. Michael’s in the final of the girls’ singles bracket. And on Saturday afternoon, the Lady Cardinals made it a 3-0 weekend in capturing the state team championship.

  • Pecos star wins five events in state meet

    Yesh indeed!

    Pecos senior Yeshemabet Turner owned the jump pits over the weekend. Then she owned the awards podium — collecting five individual championships.

    Turner shattered a state record in the triple jump with a 37-7 3/4, and it was the first of several first-place finishes that helped the Lady Panthers place fourth in the team standings of the Class 2A state track and field championships hosted by the University of New Mexico.

  • Cowboys sweep CCU, claim spot in postseason

    After winning six straight games to close the regular season, the New Mexico Highlands baseball team secured a spot in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference postseason tournament.

    The Cowboys (25-24 overall, 19-21 RMAC) and coach Steve Jones now head to Grand Junction, Colo., for the six-team tourney on the campus of Highlands' longtime archrivals, Mesa State College. NMHU opens with top-seeded Nebraska-Kearney at noon on Wednesday.
