    With the “clink” sound of aluminum bats colliding with the hide of softballs, not to mention the occasional off-color humor and “carilla” from the field, dugouts and stands, it sounds like summer is here in the Meadow City.

  • Editorial: Class of 2010 can be proud

    The Robertson High School Class of 2010 has been through a lot. The seniors who just graduated saw six of their classmates arrested for assaulting some underclassmen at the school’s annual football camp, then the entire class had to endure the humiliation that came with the resulting state and national attention.

  • Police: Chacon man beat up wife

    A Chacon man is accused of beating up his wife after drinking, state police said.

    Roger Romero, 48, was charged with four counts of aggravated battery against a household member and interference with communications.

    According to Magistrate Court documents, Romero kicked his wife out of his home after beating her up on May 13.

  • West board picks schools leader

    The West Las Vegas school board chose a familiar face to take the district’s reins.

    In a unanimous vote, the board on Monday selected the district’s former associate superintendent, Ruben Cordova, as the new superintendent. That was after the board had interviewed candidates behind closed doors earlier that day.

    “It seems like he (Cordova) will fit well. He’s already been here. He doesn’t have to learn the system,” board member Gary Gold said.

  • Adult softball

    The following are upcoming city league adult softball games sponsored by the City of Las Vegas Recreation Department. Games are held nightly Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at the Rodriguez Park Softball Complex off of Grant Street.

    Scores will be published as reported to the Optic.

    The season began Monday, May 24.

  • West board says it's being underpaid

    West Las Vegas board members sparred with their business manager last week, saying they were being underpaid.

    Business Manager Dawn Biagianti said the district paid board members for 18 meetings, but that it is supposed to pay for one meeting a month.

    “That’s why I budgeted what I did,” Biagianti said during a school board meeting.

    Board members disagreed.

  • Letter: ID needed for a lot of things

    I am asked to show identification: When I show up for a doctor’s appointment; when filling out a credit card or loan application; when applying for or renewing a drivers license or passport; when applying for any kind of insurance; when filling out college applications; when donating blood; when obtaining certain prescription drugs; when making some debit purchases, especially if I’m out of state; and when collecting a boarding pass for airline or train travel.

  • WLV fires volleyball coach

    It’s a familiar refrain: West Las Vegas High School is reportedly looking for a new head volleyball coach.

    The school relieved Brian Gurule of his coaching duties late this past week, the coach confirmed Friday.

    Gurule took over the program in 2008, his second time at the helm, and had coached the last two seasons. The Lady Dons were 7-14 this past fall.

    “I’m disappointed,” he said. “But you’ve just got to move on. I wish the girls the best of luck.”
