  • Gold, Scarver vying to be Mora Fiesta queen

    Jesselle Kyanna Gold and Amber Scarver are in the running for this year’s Mora Fiesta Queen. This year’s fiestas take place on Saturday and Sunday at the village located north of Las Vegas on State Road 518.

    Gold, 13, is the daughter of Jessie and Rebecca Gold. She is the sister of Janiya and Jessie Jr., and the granddaughter of Frances Torres and the late Steve Gold, and Felix and Gloria Rodriguez.

  • State awarded grant for exchange

    SANTA FE— New Mexico has received a nearly $19 million federal grant to market its health insurance exchange to uninsured individuals and businesses and to educate them about their options in the state’s online marketplace.
    The exchange, which is envisioned as a one-stop, online shopping center for insurance, expects to enroll more than 80,000 uninsured New Mexicans in insurance plans next year and up to 211,000 people by 2020.

  • Healers attend conference

    ALBUQUERQUE — Incense burns at the door. Prayers are whispered in dozens of languages. A shell horn calls people back from lunch.
    More than 200 traditional healers and students of alternative medicine from across the United States and Latin America are at the University of New Mexico this week for an annual conference on curanderismo, the art of folk healing widely used among indigenous populations. The healers, also called curanderos, are scheduled to attend workshops and provide training.

    Pearce attacks remarks

    ALBUQUERQUE — Congressman Steve Pearce says a fellow Republican congressman’s comment comparing young college-age immigrants to drug mules are “unproductive” and “divisive.”
    The Albuquerque Journal reports that the New Mexico Republican criticized recent remarks made by Rep. Steve King and said he disagreed with Iowa congressman.

  • Miranda Serna camp a big success

    Organizers of the Miranda Serna Memorial Basketball Camp are calling the event a success, saying that 62 youths ages 7 to 10 participated.
    The camp took place July 15-17, and there were plenty of volunteers to help participants learn the basics of basketball. The idea to start the camp came from Miranda’s cousin Aaron Chavez, a former Ranger and now a Bakersfield College coach in California, and from Miranda’s former coach and Mora Middle School Coach Jeannie Abeyta.
