  • WLV girls seventh in Jag Invite

    Even while not at full strength, the West Las Vegas girls’ cross country team cracked the top half of a packed Jaguar Invitational this past weekend.

    The Lady Dons earned a seventh-place team finish Saturday in Santa Fe, hanging tough with a field that included overall winner Rio Rancho and a number of other big schools.

  • RFK Jr., union leader speak in town

    Robert F. Kennedy Jr. wowed an audience gathered at Margaret Kennedy Hall on the Highlands campus Friday with stories about his father’s involvement in the fight for civil rights, including the early days when he was deeply involved with Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers’ struggle for equality.

    Kennedy also had the crowd laughing at times when he talked about some of his own experiences supporting environmental causes around the world.

  • WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Cowgirls earn a good split

    Highlands’ soccer women (5-8-1) split their two weekend matches, beating Colorado-Colorado Springs 1-0 and then losing 3-1 to regional power Regis.

    Monica Vasquez booted the lone goal 10 minutes and 37 seconds into the match Friday. The senior from Hollister, Calif., was credited with four shots, two on goal. Goalkeeper Shannon Delarosbil and the Cowgirl defense preserved the shutout with Delarosbil making four saves.

  • Official says he's here to stay

    East school board member Ramon “Swoops” Montao wants to set the record straight: He said he has every intention of staying on the board through the end of his term in 2011.

    Montao said many people are under the impression that he has moved out of town. But he said he still maintains a residence in the Las Vegas City Schools district.

    One of Montao’s colleagues wants to discuss his residency at a meeting this week, saying that Montao has “to do the right thing.”

  • Court reduces warrant number

    Municipal Court has made progress in reducing the number of those wanted on outstanding warrants.

    Judge Eddie Trujillo said last week that many people have come into his court since late August when the Optic published the names of those wanted on warrants.

    “It was a big help. I was hoping for more people, but we really cleaned up a lot of files. Some people were deceased, and we had no way of knowing it, so we had death certificates brought in,” he said.

  • Hispanic artists of the New Deal era

    A scholar and lecturer will bring the New Deal-era arts and artists to life on her visit to Las Vegas.

    On Saturday, Oct. 11, at 2 p.m., Tey Marianna Nunn will speak on “Hispana and Hispano Artists of the New Deal Era,” focusing on those northern New Mexicans who were part of the arts and crafts movement supported by the government during the 1930s and 1940s. She will show slides of their work as she discusses their contributions.

  • Thursday volleyball: Pojo bumps WLV from top; Robertson sweeps Raton

    Though it is early in the district volleyball season, first place was on the line Thursday night as West Las Vegas and Pojoaque entered the contest with 2-0 records in 2-3A.

    The Elkettes also came in as the No. 1 ranked team in Class 3A. The Lady Dons came in as the 10th ranked team in 3A. West was riding a two-match winning streak; Pojoaque was also riding a two-match winning streak.

    Pojoaque left Gillie Lopez Gym 3-0 — and left Lady Dons head coach Brian Gurule at a loss for words afterwards.

  • Cowboys get little respite with UNK

    From the looks of it, the schedule doesn’t ease up much for the New Mexico Highlands football team.

    The Cowboys (1-5 overall, 1-3 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) journey to the flatlands this weekend to take on Nebraska-Kearney (3-3, 3-1). The Lopers own lopsided wins against league rivals Western State (44-15), Adams State (37-0) and last week at RMAC football newcomer Colorado State-Pueblo (41-10). Their lone RMAC defeat came Sept. 27 at nationally ranked Chadron State and the margin was a field goal at 17-14.

  • College looking at tax increase

    Luna Community College is considering whether to ask voters to approve a tax hike to pay for building improvements.

    Under its proposal, the tax bill for a $150,000 house would go up by $101. That would apply if the Luna service area — Las Vegas, Mora, Santa Rosa and Springer — stays the same.

    If the service area expands to places such as Raton, Vaughn and Pecos, the tax bill for a $150,000 house would be $81.

    The increased tax would allow Luna to sell bonds to generate the proceeds for the improvements.
