  • LFC proposes state worker pay raises

    SANTA FE — State workers in New Mexico would receive a 1 percent salary increase — their first across-the-board raise since 2008 — and state police officers would get a 3 percent pay hike under budget recommendations released Wednesday by a legislative panel.

Travel north of Las Vegas was discouraged and all roads and streets were snow-packed and slick. Highway Department, City and Town crews were at work this morning clearing the major streets and highways.

  • Gov. to expand Medicaid

    ALBUQUERQUE — New Mexico, a state that hovers near the top of national poverty and uninsured rankings, plans to follow provisions of a federal health care law to expand Medicaid to potentially provide medical services to 170,000 low-income adults, Republican Gov. Susana Martinez announced Wednesday.

  • Virgin Galactic to make payment

    LAS CRUCES — Virgin Galactic will make the first-ever rent payment this month for use of Spaceport America in New Mexico, state officials said.

    The company will pay $85,833 monthly, according to a calculation based on information from the spaceport, The Las Cruces Sun-News reported Wednesday.

    The amount is one-twelfth of the $1 million a year charged to Virgin Galactic for use of the facilities. It will pay another $2,500 a month in rent for land.

    THUMBS UP! TRYING AGAIN. There comes a point when you just can’t abandon a project, and we suppose that’s been the case with the Mora County Courthouse, which seems to be taking forever to complete, and at an enormous price tag. Commissioners are once again asking the Legislature for additional funds, but this time they’re also interested in securing a loan from the state Finance Authority to help with its completion. The borrowed money would be paid back with revenue from leasing part of the building to the Administrative Office of the Courts.
