    Report: Suspect assaulted uncle

    CHARDON, Ohio — A sheriff's report says an Ohio school shooting suspect and his brother assaulted their uncle in 2009 when the uncle stopped by their house.

    The Geauga County Sheriff's Office report from December 2009 says suspect T.J. Lane jumped on his uncle and tried to choke him while his brother grabbed their uncle's legs.

    The report says Lane was helping his brother because he assumed he was being hurt by their uncle.

    The Las Vegas branch of the American Association of University Women is offering scholarship opportunities to New Mexico Highlands University main campus female students.

    The application deadline is April 16. One or more eligible students will be awarded $1,000 scholarships.

    Applicants must have demonstrated that they are capable of and committed to earning an undergraduate or graduate degree from Highlands. They must also live in Las Vegas or surrounding communities.

  • Submissions sought for ‘Art on the Edge’ exhibit

    Friends of Contemporary Art, a support group of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation, announced its biennial juried exhibition, Art on the Edge, to be hosted by the New Mexico Museum of Art in 2013.
    Artists based in New Mexico or surrounding states — Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Utah, and Arizona — are invited to submit work online for consideration. The deadline for submission is 11:59 p.m. on April 30, Mountain Time. Information and a prospectus may be downloaded from www.nmartmuseum.org/artontheedge.

  • State hoops tourneys to begin

    March Madness gets under way beginning Friday and Saturday for teams playing in the New Mexico state high school basketball tournaments.

    On Friday in Class 3A girls’ hoops, Robertson’s seventh-seeded Lady Cardinals host No. 10 Hot Springs at Mike Marr Gym. Meanwhile No. 15 West Las Vegas plays at No. 2 Santa Fe Indian.

    Over in Class 2A girls, the Mora Rangerettes — having earned a lofty No. 2 seed — play host to No. 15 Jemez Valley at Montoya Gym.
