    A look back on the school year in sports:

    FALL

    The resurgence of the Robertson football program was one of the hot topics of autumn. Longtime defensive coordinator Leroy Gonzalez, having most recently assisted Chad Roanhaus at New Mexico Highlands and Richard Martinez back at RHS, earned a promotion to head coach.

    COYOTE CREEK: Flow is 0.74 cfs. Fishing is reported as slow due to low water conditions. The creek was stocked with 560 triploid rainbow trout two weeks ago and another 560 triploid rainbow trout last week.

    Jordan Lopez was selected as Elks Student of the Month for May. The recent graduate of West Las Vegas High School is the daughter of Dorothy Lopez and Ron Lopez.

    At West Las Vegas High School she is involved in Business Professionals of America and Semias de Salud. She is also enrolled at Luna Community College.

    She is a member of the National Honor Society and Phi Theta Kappa. She is also in the top ten in her graduating class.

    She plans to continue her education at LCC and major in nursing.

    Luna Community College is offering two enhanced college credit summer programs for high school students and 2011 graduating seniors.

  • LVCS board seeks members for audit committee

    The Board of Education for the Las Vegas City Schools is inviting parents of students attending the school district and members of the community who have experience in accounting or finance to serve on its audit committee.

    The audit committee reports directly to the board and shall be asked to fulfill the following responsibilities:

    • Evaluate the request for proposals for annual financial audit services;

    • Recommend the selection of the financial auditor;

  • NMHU students receive fellowships

    Highlands University

    Two New Mexico Highlands University media arts students received $2,500 fellowships, thanks to the Seabury Foundation and a full match from the university’s foundation.

    Spring 2011 graduate Rianne Trujillo and junior Arianna Andreatta were tapped for the honor. They showcased their video projects May 12 at an awards presentation.  

  • Mora County Notebook: Joshua Garcia receives prestigious scholarship

    Joshua Garcia and six other northern New Mexico recipients were honored at a luncheon this month where they received the Pete Domenici Scholarship funded by Los Alamos National Laboratory.

    Garcia, son of John and Ann Garcia, is a 2011 graduate of Mora High School. At the luncheon recipients had a chance to sit and visit with Domenici.

    The students selected for the scholarship were chosen because of their outstanding academic achievement as well as outstanding leadership skills and community service.
