RALEIGH, N.C. — Andy Griffith’s gift to the show that bore his name wasn’t just the homespun wisdom of the plain-spoken sheriff he played. It was the place he created: a small town where all foibles are forgiven and friendships are forever, full of characters who felt like family.

  • The lifeblood of U.S. startups

In a rare moment of genuinely bipartisan lawmaking, the president recently signed the JOBS Act into law. Short for “Jumpstart Our Business Startups,” JOBS will roll back some of the regulatory barriers that small and mid-sized entrepreneurial ventures face in their efforts to grow and go public.

This is a great victory for the American start-up community. Now, policymakers need to turn their attention to the hurdles in the way of talent acquisition.

THUMBS UP! FUN ADDITION. Adding a comedic element to the Fiestas isn’t exactly new, but this year’s comedy performance by actor and comedian Steven Michael Quezada promises to add some spice to the weekend. He hits the Ilfeld Auditorium stage at 8 tonight; general-admission tickets are $20 each, while Highlands University students get in for $15.

    By Beth Harris

OMAHA, Neb. — Dara Torres is headed back to Florida to watch the Olympics on TV, like a lot of middle-aged folks.

The 45-year-old mom missed making a record sixth U.S. swim team by nine-hundredths of a second, finishing fourth in the 50-meter freestyle on the last night of the trials Monday.

“This is really over,” she said, smiling. “That’s it; I’m going to enjoy some time with my daughter, have a nice summer and cheer on the U.S. team from afar.”
