  • Lady Dons just shy of unbeaten Moriarty

    Moriarty's girls' basketball team remained undefeated Tuesday night, picking up its 11th win 53-50 in overtime at West Las Vegas.

    It was the closest anyone has come to beating the Pintos this season, except for Class 5A Belen, which lost by a point to Moriarty on Dec. 5.

    Kailei Edwards buried a 3-pointer from the right wing with 10 seconds left in what ended up as the game-winning shot. Alyssa Adams scored 16 points and Emerald Russell 10 for the Pintos (11-0).

    Monday, more than 70 swimmers braved the 9-degree weather to take the 22nd Annual Polat Plunge into Storrie Lake in an event sponsored by the Sunrise Kiwanis.

    Sunshine that began just before the event made it seem slightly warmer.

  • Two-year contract for Gutierrez

    West Las Vegas School Superintendent Chris Gutierrez will be starting this New Year with a two-year contract, offered by the school board. After two executive sessions, in which Gutierrez’s performance was evaluated, the board unanimously voted “yes” to extend the administrator’s contract for the 2018-19 and 2019-20 school years, said Board Member Christine Ludi in a written response.

    The $1,508 raised by United World College students during the recent Aprepas for Venezuela will provide 4,500 meals to children in that country.

  • What’s in a name?

    I’ve been called a number of things in my life. Some of the names, at least, have even been respectable.
    Many old timers still call me Mannie. In my childhood, I must have been given that moniker by one of my parents. It stuck, and now, when someone (probably an alumnus of Immaculate Conception School in Las Vegas) calls me that, I generally recognize that person as a former classmate.

  • Four inmates hosptialized after Detention Center ‘disturbance’

    Four inmates were taken to a hospital after a "disturbance" Monday afternoon at the San Miguel County Detention Center, according to a news release from the county.

    The injuries, which were not described in detail in the release, happened as the result of an assault against a sergeant on the detention center staff that escalated into a larger situation at about 5:30 p.m. Monday, involving multiple housing areas within the jail. The sergeant was investigating a theft within the jail when he was assaulted.

    Alabama and Georgia won their College Football Playoff semifinals on Monday and will meet in the national championship next week in Atlanta, the home of the Southeastern Conference title game.

    Inside and out, Bernalillo emerged as the class of the 64th annual Stu Clark Tournament, held this past weekend at Highlands’ Wilson Complex.

    Luis Villegas swished three of his four 3-point baskets in the opening quarter while the combination of 6-7 Solomon Fragua and 6-4 Mariano Lobato provided a matchup nightmare in the Spartans’ 71-63 win over Robertson in Saturday night’s championship game.
