  • Dept. seeks applicants for wildlife officers

    The Department of Game and Fish is looking for qualified men and women to join the next generation of conservation officers who protect and conserve the state’s wildlife.

    Recruitment is open now and will end Feb. 7 for this position. The Department has multiple positions statewide.

  • Appointments being taken for child seat fitting event

    The NMDOT, Safer New Mexico Now and the City of Las Vegas will hold a child safety seat fitting station on Jan. 29. It will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at Las Vegas Fire Station #1, 604 Legion Drive.

    On this holiday in which we remember a man who gave his life for “a more perfect union,” we should also remember how he acted. He was a man who lived in violent times, yet his response was peaceful.

    Zig Zigler used to tell the story of a man in Alaska who had two dogs, a black one and a white one. Each week he would take his dogs to town and they would fight against each other. The locals would gamble by betting which dog they thought would win the battle that week and then make or lose money accordingly. Some nights the black dog would win and other nights the white one would succeed.

  • Close calls in Nebraska

    A late turnover by Chadron State helped the Highlands Cowboys hang on to an 85-82 squeaker Friday night in Chadron, Neb.

    Mannie Cass and Stargell Love both posted double-doubles for Highlands. Cass dropped 15 points on the Eagles to go with a team-best 10 rebounds. Love had a full stat line, tallying a game-high 18 points and 10 assists, plus five boards and three assists.
