    The revelation last week that the U.S. government is collecting the phone records of hundreds of millions of Americans and that it also secured a secret court order allowing the National Security Agency and FBI to tap directly into the servers of major U.S. internet companies, including Google and Facebook, is troubling.

    President Obama and others defend the programs, calling them a necessary defense against terrorism. Privacy advocates are up in arms, arguing that the government shouldn’t be spying on its citizens without probable cause.

    Even as a child, I looked forward to the warm days of summer. I wasn’t a sedentary child by choice, but a bout with rheumatic fever at about age 6, left me a bit fragile and caused me to be homebound for better than half of my second grade year of school.

    A near-capacity crowd at Saturday night’s Las Vegas Train Robbers game was treated to the sight of “Longmire” actor Lou Diamond Phillips hitting a single off series star Robert Taylor at Rodriguez Park.

    That turned out to be just a preview — or “trailer,” in cinematic jargon — of the hitting to come.

    Several hundred fans in attendance watched as the home team clubbed out four home runs in a stirring 10-5 win over the Alpine (Texas) Cowboys.

  • Cognasi, Phipps honored by RMAC

    Anthony Cognasi and Danisha Phipps are the latest New Mexico Highlands University student-athletes to have their names adorning the east wall at the Wilson Complex.
    Cognasi and Phipps are the school’s choices for the 2012-13 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Scholar-Athletes, the Colorado Springs-based league office reported this past Thursday.
