    SANTA FE — The Senate has elected Democrat Mary Kay Papen of Las Cruces as its top-ranking leader, making her the first woman in more than 70 years to serve as president pro tem.

  • Apartments planned on Mills

    The city of Las Vegas Housing Authority is partnering with a Santa Fe non-profit organization on a project to build 60 affordable housing units across from the Mills Plaza Shopping Center.

    The construction of the Macario Gonzales Apartments hinges on whether Santa Fe Civic Housing Authority can secure low income housing tax credits from the state Mortgage Finance Authority through a competitive process. If Santa Fe Civic secures the tax credits, it would use them to attract an investor to finance the bulk of the project.

  • Plea deal reached in stabbing case

    The 24-year-old Las Vegas man arrested in June for allegedly stabbing three men at a house on the 2500 block of Hot Springs Boulevard has reached a plea agreement in the case.

    Walter Maes, whose address has previously been listed as the 400 block of Bernice Drive, pleaded guilty last week to three counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, third-degree felonies, and to one count of tampering with evidence, a fourth-degree felony.

  • Democrats continue to battle gov

    SANTA FE — Nearly a third of New Mexico’s lawmakers were new to their jobs when the Legislature convened on Tuesday, but the hurdles confronting Republican Gov. Susana Martinez remain largely unchanged as she tries to overcome Democratic opposition to high-profile administration proposals such as stopping the state from issuing driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.

  • Leger to remain as commission chair

    The San Miguel County Commission re-elected Nicolas Leger as its chairman and Ron Ortega as its vice chairman during its organizational meeting last week.

    Leger and Ortega have served in those posts for a year, and both thanked their colleagues for their continued faith in their leadership.

    Also at that meeting, held on Jan. 8, newly elected Commissioner Gilbert Sena took his seat on the commission, replacing David Salazar, who didn’t seek re-election because of term limits.

    Tuesday, Jan. 15 — Effective with the next telephone directory due in March, all telephone numbers in Las Vegas will be changed to seven numerals, I.G. Eubanks, manager for Mountain States Telephone, announced. The gradual change of telephone numbers from two letters and five numerals to all numerals started about two years ago and many have been converted since then. “We did not know how fast this gradual change would proceed, so we could not predict when it would be possible for all customers to have the new telephone numbers,” Eubanks stated.
