  • Jail tries to reduce repeat offenders

    The San Miguel County jail has become a revolving door with a recidivism rate of more than 80 percent — in other words, most inmates are returning.

    Lack of residential, in-patient treatment services has placed challenges to the jail’s ability to properly house and serve offenders that have substance abuse and mental health issues, according to a county press release.

  • Students create page for agency

    West Las Vegas high school students in Kirk Ludi’s class are not only learning about web design, they are actually creating a professional web page for the Department of Health’s Region 2.

    Diana Abeyta, a community health improvement coordinator with the department, said her region encompasses nine counties in the northeastern part of the state. When she took her current position in August, she realized that two of the nine counties she oversaw didn’t have websites.

  • Police ID man killed in crash

    Authorities have identified the man who died from injuries while chasing another car early Friday morning.

    Frank Romero, 26, of Albuquerque, was trying to pass two women in another car in the 500 block of Chavez Street when he struck three parked cars. He knew one of the women, police said. Romero reportedly got into a dispute with the woman somewhere else in town.

    Romero, formerly of Las Vegas, was a self-employed landscaper.

  • Teenager hurt in shooting at party

    City police are investigating a shooting that happened at a party early Sunday morning.

    A 16-year-old was hurt in the shooting, but police wouldn’t divulge where he was hit, saying that revealing such information at this point could compromise the investigation.

    Police said that two men were asked to leave a party at 314 11th St. on Saturday night. The men returned around 1 a.m. and fired shots at the house, hitting the 16-year-old, who was inside.

  • WLV fourth in Farmington with nine wrestlers

    Still five weight classes shy of a full team, the West Las Vegas wrestling squad neverthless cracked the top four in this past weekend’s Piedra Vista Panther Classic.

    John Armijo won his 171-pound class in dominant fashion and was presented with the Outstanding Wrestler award for the higher divisions.

    Armijo scored a 10-2 decision over Bayfield (Colo.) standout Jeff Huffmyer in the final.

    “He had a good showing,” said head coach Robert Alarcon. “But he’s still not there (in terms of wrestling shape). He’ll get better.”

  • Paying customers get gas shut off

    In recent months, the city has enacted measures to prevent winter shutoffs of natural gas to those who can’t afford the big bills all at once.

    But what about those who can pay?

    City officials acknowledged this week that they have shut off gas to some customers who paid their bills on time, but they didn’t give the number affected.

    Apparently, the utilities department had a backlog in its mail, so payments had been sitting around unopened.

  • Speeding sheriff now charged with DWI

    SANTA ROSA — In late July, a reporter witnessed Guadalupe County Sheriff Robert Chavez going 85 mph from Mora to Las Vegas. The speed limit was 60 mph.

    Apparently, he’s not a strict follower of the laws when it comes to driving.

    Last week, Chavez was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated after being arrested Dec. 12 by state police.

    I live in a solar-powered home on the quiet, rural mesa that Invenergy wants to turn into an industrial wind facility, and I don’t know if I should laugh or cry at this corporation’s claim that it is a “good neighbor” because it gives a whopping $500 per year to families living within a third of a mile of their turbines.

  • Twelve locals all-district in football

    A quick-thinking, hard-hitting defensive back and lynchpin of two state championship teams, Robertson’s Nathan Abreu left an often jarring impact on a football game.

    Abreu was honored this week as District 2-3A’s Defensive Player of the Year, highlighting a strong senior season in spite of difficult circumstances for the Robertson team.

    Overall, Abreu was one of seven Cardinals named to the all-district team. Five West Las Vegas Dons also were selected to the squad, which was announced Thursday.

  • Management team runs City Hall

    Las Vegas Mayor Tony Marquez thought he had an interim city manager. It turned out that wasn’t the case.

    After City Manager Sharon Caballero resigned Friday, Marquez said his plan was to ask Community Developer Director Elmer Martinez to take Caballero’s place temporarily. In an e-mail Tuesday, the mayor stated that Martinez was the interim manager.

    Apparently, Martinez wasn’t keen on that idea.
