  • ‘Heroes today and forever’

    A little more than a year ago, the lives of Frank Romero and Gene Hern drew to a horrific end in a trench off Cinder Road and Palo Verde.

    On Friday, their families, Gov. Susana Martinez and about 200 others gathered at the site to unveil a memorial and to recognize them as public servants who unwittingly and unknowingly gave their lives for the safety of others.

  • Quintana prevails in Co-op race

    Mora-San Miguel Electric Co-op Chairman Robert Quintana trounced his opponent in the race for the District 2 board of trustees position.

    Quintana beat challenger Rock Ulibarri by a more than two-to-one margin, garnering 246 votes to Ulibarri’s 105.

    The results were announced Thursday evening, minutes after the voting concluded. The news drew a thunderous applause from Quintana’s supporters. Quintana and Ulibarri then walked toward one another and shook hands.

    Quintana declined to comment on his victory on Thursday.

  • Vigil facing tough foe in primary

    The legislative race that has arguably drawn the most intrigue in San Miguel County is the matchup between Incumbent Richard Vigil and challenger Tomás Salazar.

    Vigil and Salazar are vying for the Democratic nomination for the District 70 House seat, which encompasses the vast majority of San Miguel County — including Las Vegas— and portions of Santa Fe and Torrance counties.

    Because there is no Republican challenger, the candidate winning in the June 5 primary is all but guaranteed the two-year term.

    Fair Association board meets this Tuesday

    The San Miguel/Mora County Fair Association Board of Directors is meeting at 7 p.m. this Tuesday to consider and vote on proposed by-law changes. Meeting time is 7 p.m. at the county fairgrounds. Any member who has paid dues is eligible to vote. A copy of the proposed changes is available at the County Extension Offices in San Miguel and Mora counties.

  • NMHU’s Torres holding fundraiser for Italy trip

    A New Mexico Highlands University music student is one of only 10 students worldwide selected to participate in a Summer Guitar Institute in Tuscany, Italy.

    Daniel Torres, an 18-year-old Las Vegas native, will train at the Volterra Project from July 10-18. The project is an innovative experiment in classical guitar training founded and directed by acclaimed Italian guitarist Antigoni Goni.
