  • Plaza unveils decorative ornaments

    As the outline of a familiar superhero appeared in the dark night sky above the Charles Ilfeld Building, the new addition to the Plaza Hotel, Estevan Madrid turned to his pal Christopher Chavez and said, “Batman can do anything!”

    Madrid and Chavez were in the crowd for the unveiling of the finials, or decorative ornaments atop the Ilfeld annex Saturday night.

    Innkeeper Wid Slick said it was a turn-of-the century photograph that clued him into the fact that the architecture included the finials.

  • Padilla denies any dealings

    San Miguel County Commissioner Albert Padilla said he has had no dealings with Invenergy, a Chicago-based company that is planning wind turbines in the Bernal area.

    At a County Commission meeting last week, Gloria Gonzales, a group of residents who want more restrictions on wind farms, said she understood that Padilla may be working on a lease agreement with Invenergy.

    Padilla, who wasn’t at the commission meeting, said that wasn’t the case and that Gonzales may be confusing him with another Albert Padilla.

  • EDITORIAL: Thumbs

    UP thumb ... WINDS OF INVOLVEMENT. Dozens of Bernal- and Valley-area residents attended the San Miguel County Commission meeting this week to express their concern with plans to build a wind farm near their homes. They want a county regulatory ordinance strengthened to push the turbines back further from residential properties.

    County Manager Lee Montoya recommended that county staff meet with residents and come up with a solution — a move we think is wise and we hope will benefit all involved.

  • Cardinals hold on, beat Mora

    R.J. McNellis and Justin Bustos combined to hit three last-minute free throws and McNellis blocked a shot that would have tied the game, helping Robertson cling to a 73-70 win over Mora on Thursday night at Mike Marr Gym.

    The photo finish came after the visiting Rangers rallied from 19 down — they trailed 56-37 at one point — with a furious fourth quarter.

  • COLUMN: Rural vs. urban

    "Why should we give up our beautiful landscape to make California, Nevada and Utah more resourceful?”

    That was the very first question at a recent community meeting in El Pueblo about a proposed “wind farm” on a nearby mesa.  It was from 13-year-old Ramos Aragon, a Memorial Middle School student, who’s family has agricultural ties to the Valley.

    Right on, Ramos!  He zeroed in on the heart of the issue.

  • EDITORIAL: Immediate search needed

    Once again, our city government is in turmoil. On Friday, City Manager Sharon Caballero announced her resignation.

    Undoubtedly, this is a low point for Mayor Tony Marquez, elected in March. Caballero said that while she supported the mayor’s agenda, he has been micromanaging and has had a hard time focusing. And Councilwoman Diane Moore, a Marquez ally, expressed her frustration with the mayor, echoing some of Caballero’s criticism.

  • Police: Man dies in car chase

    A man died from injuries after hitting parked cars while chasing a woman early this morning, Las Vegas police said.

    Police officers haven’t positively identified the man yet, but they believe he is in his mid-20s, said Mercy Lopez, a city spokeswoman.

    The man hit three parked cars in the 500 block of Chavez Street, and he reportedly died from injuries suffered while hitting one of the vehicles, Lopez said.

  • Tough day for Lucero, Peek in PRCA finals rodeo

    It was a difficult day Thursday at the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association national finals for a couple of competitors with local ties.

    The team of JoJo LeMond and Martin Lucero slipped a bit in the team roping competition. LeMond and Lucero posted a time of 22.4 seconds, good for 14th in the round. Travis Tryan and Cory Petska won the round with a time of 3.5 seconds and picked up $16,767 each.

  • Mayor may have lost ally

    No answers. No return calls. Just silence.

    During a City Council meeting this week, Councilwoman Diane Moore said she has struggled to get in touch with Mayor Tony Marquez. With the mayor sitting next to her, she said the mayor hasn’t returned any of her calls, even a message she left with Marquez’s wife.

    “I hope to get a response back,” she said.

  • Panthers walk line to beat Ruidoso

    Tim Baca turned in an exceptional night at the free-throw line, leading the Pecos Panthers to a 57-43 win over Ruidoso in the opening round of the Sandia Prep Invitational.

    Baca went 15 for 15 from the charity stripe and scored 21 points. As a team the Panthers were 25 of 29 from the free-throw line.

    Pecos led 13-9 at the end of the first period and extended the lead to 30-14 at the half. With the Panthers drawing early fouls, head coach Clyde Sanchez turned to his bench to hold the Warriors at bay.
