  • School district sued over yoga

    SAN DIEGO — An attorney representing a family bent out of shape over a public school yoga program in the beach city of Encinitas filed a lawsuit Wednesday to stop the district-wide classes.

    In the lawsuit filed in San Diego Superior Court, attorney Dean Broyles argued that the twice weekly, 30-minute classes are inherently religious, in violation of the separation between church and state.

  • Mora County Notebook - Andres Pacheco celebrates 85th birthday

    MSgt. Andres Pacheco was honored at his 85th birthday at K-Bob’s Restaurant in Las Vegas on Saturday.

    He was accompanied by his family and many relatives. They came from Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Bernalillo, Albuquerque and Las Vegas. There were 54 adults and quite a few children.

    The party was enjoyed by everyone.  

    Pacheco served in the United States Air Force for 20 years and has been retired for 33 years. His service took him to the wars in Vietnam and Korea besides the time he spent in the United States and elsewhere.

  • Robertson’s Aragon signs with Bethel

    Santiago Aragon thought his football playing days were over, and he’d already turned his focus to strictly academic pursuits once he graduates from Robertson High in May.

    But Bethel College, a school in North Newton, Kan., changed things by offering Aragon a football scholarship.

    “I wasn’t expecting to play ball anymore,” he said Wednesday morning after a signing ceremony at Mike Marr Gym. “So it’s indescribable to have this chance. I don’t know what to say.”

  • RHS, WLV girls lose home finales; district tournaments next week

    After dropping Wednesday night home games — the home finales and senior night for both schools — the Robertson and West Las Vegas girls’ basketball teams now look forward to a shot at redemption represented by the District 2-3A tournament.

    The district tourney begins Monday, with fifth-seeded WLV likely traveling to fourth-seeded Raton in what could be a make-or-break game for both teams’ state tournament aspirations.

  • Youth wrestling next week

    Robertson’s wrestling program is hosting the Junior Cardinal Classic for children in kindergarten through fifth grade beginning Monday, Feb. 25, at McFarland Hall.

    Registration ($30 first child in family, $20 additional children) will be held 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. Monday. No practice will be held then.

    Kindergarten and first-grade wrestlers will attend 4:15 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.

    Second through fifth graders will attend 4:15 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday and Friday.

  • Rangers top Peñasco

    Mora’s boys’ basketball team topped Peñasco 82-60 on Tuesday, improving to 17-8 and 5-2 with just Saturday’s finale at No. 1 ranked Pecos (7-0 after Wednesday’s win over 5-3 Santa Fe Prep) left in the regular season.

    Cody Najar (31), Lorenzo Chavez (24) and Amrick Vasquez (11) led the Rangers in scoring.

  • LV junior wrestlers wrap up solid season

    Las Vegas Junior Wrestling took wrestlers to district and to the New Mexico Junior Wrestling State Championships held Feb. 10 in Albuquerque. The program came home with two junior state champions, as well as third- and fifth-place finishers.
