    Las Vegas is in Stage IV water restrictions. Under the restrictions, residents are not allowed to water their lawns at all. At-home car washing is also prohibited. Local car washes may remain open as long as they are using recycled water. Fines range from a warning for a first offense to a $450 fine for a third and subsequent offense.

  • Time running out on contract

    ALBUQUERQUE — The clock is winding down for the federal government to decide whether to renew Lockheed Martin’s contract to manage Sandia National Laboratories or hold a bidding competition to pick a corporate manager.

    The Albuquerque Journal reports that the contract for the nuclear weapons lab expires at the end of September 2012, and records suggest that the federal government has run out of options to easily grant the company a one-year extension.

    Motorcycle death rates up

    ALBUQUERQUE — A report by the New Mexico Department of Health found that motorcycle death rates in the state have doubled from 1999-2009 even as roadways became safer.

    The Albuquerque Journal reports that the number of motorcycle deaths in New Mexico climbed from 20 in 1999 to 48 in 2009, the most recent year for which information was available.

  • Sanchez lends campaign $200,000

    SANTA FE — Lt. Gov. John Sanchez has loaned $200,500 to his campaign for the Republican nomination for New Mexico’s open U.S. Senate seat, according to a finance report released Monday by the campaign.

    Sanchez had a cash balance of $246,539 in his campaign account at the end of June.

    The Senate seat is open next year because Democratic incumbent Jeff Bingaman is retiring.

  • Taking a stand

    Las Vegas took a stand Sunday — against senseless vandalism, and even the hint of intolerance.

    Some 80 people turned out for a public meeting this past weekend to discuss the vandalism at the Montefiore and Masonic cemeteries that took place in late June. The Montefiore cemetery — a Jewish cemetery at the outskirts of the Masons’ — sustained the most damage, which led to speculation that the act was anti-Semitic.

    As a continuing unrepentant language cop, I really had thought of laying off criticizing those electronic message boards that greet visitors.

    Yes, since it’s summer, when most of the schools are in recess, there hasn’t been much to report. But if there is a bit of criticism, I aim it at the fact that a number of the signs appear to have gone on summer break, along with teachers and students.
