    Senate panel rejects bill

    A New Mexico legislator says she’ll try again next year now that a state Senate committee has rejected a bill to end promotion of third-graders whose reading ability isn’t adequate.
    The Senate Education Committee rejected the so-called “social promotion” bill sponsored by Republican Sen. Gay Kernan of Hobbs on a 5-4 party-line vote following a nearly four-hour hearing Saturday.

    The New Mexico Commission for Deaf & Hard of Hearing — the state agency that distributes specialized telecommunications equipment — is now offering New Mexicans with hearing loss a first-of-its-kind amplified phone that allows users to read as well as hear conversations.

    The phone will be provided at no cost to New Mexicans with hearing loss.

  • District tourneys roll on this week

    More questions than answers remain in this week’s district basketball tournaments, but at least the final destinations are known.

    Pojoaque Valley’s Brandon Bustos nailed a game-winning three-pointer in the closing seconds Monday to lift the Elks to a 58-55 win over Taos in a single-game playoff to determine the District 2-3A boys’ regular-season champ and the top seed in this week’s tournament. The game was held at Gillie Lopez Gym, a neutral site.
