  • City may require more of tenants

    City Council members are considering a change in the city’s ordinance that would put more of the burden for filling out required forms for utilities on the tenant and the city.

    That would be a change. As it stands, landlords bear most of the burden, much to their chagrin.

    During public input at a recent council meeting, landlords took the city to task on the city’s landlord-tenant agreement that requires that landlords fill out form with their tenants and then take it to customer service, sometimes making multiple trips.

    WASHINGTON — New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson abandoned his nomination to become commerce secretary under pressure of a grand jury investigation into a state contract awarded to his political donors — an investigation that threatened to embarrass President-elect Barack Obama.

  • EDITORIAL: Thumbs

    UP thumb ... READY TO GO. Struggling with broken equipment for months, the management at the city’s recreation center kept its pledge to have all the treadmills operational before the end of the year. Wednesday morning, all the machines appeared to have been working fine.

    Let’s hope exercise buffs take advantage of the repaired equipment as they begin their New Year’s resolutions, and that the rec center staff can keep them working throughout the new year.

  • Lady Cards' smart finish downs Socorro

    Kim Mares converted two free throws with 13 seconds remaining and the Lady Cardinal defense stuffed the Socorro Lady Warriors to preserve a 45-42 Robertson victory in girls' basketball action Saturday afternoon at Mike Marr Gym.

    Robertson trailed 42-38 after Roxanne Silva's free throws with 2:27 left.

    Baskets by Brooke Knezevich and Kassandra Tapia and tough defense led to a tie score. After a rare miss by Silva at the free-throw line, Knezevich hit drew a foul and made one of two charity tosses with 36 seconds left to give RHS a 43-42 edge.

  • NMHU teams sweep host OPSU

    Thank you, Oklahoma Panhandle State.

    The Aggie women have represented both of the victories this season for New Mexico Highlands, which won a 68-64 overtime thriller on Friday in Goodwell, Okla., to improve to 2-10 overall.

    Oliana Seanoa scored a game-high 20 points and teammate Amanda Beauchamp recorded a double-double with 13 points (10 of which came in overtime) and 10 rebounds to pace the Cowgirls.

  • Stu Clark Tourney, day two update

    The medal round is set at the 55th Stu Clark Tournament.

    On Tuesday, Artesia ran over Shiprock 73-47 in one semifinal and Rio Grande outdueled West Las Vegas 76-65 in the other, setting up a Bulldogs vs. Ravens matchup in Wednesday night's championship game.

    Also Tuesday at New Mexico Highlands' Wilson Complex, St. Pius X beat Robertson 55-39, and Bernalillo came back from a nine-point halftime deficit to overtake Portales 56-45.

    SANTA FE — It’s time to see how I did on my 2008 predictions.

    For beginners, I picked the winners of the four open congressional seats. Remember, at this point last year, candidates hadn’t even filed yet.

    U.S. Senate — Tom Udall over Steve Pearce. Right, all the way. Udall and Pearce won their primaries. Udall took the general election.

    1st Congressional District — Daren White over Martin Heinrich. White and Heinrich both won their primaries. Heinrich took the general election. Score me only 2 out of 3 on that one.

  • Man dies in crash on U.S. 84

    A Tecolotito-area man died in a car accident on an icy road Sunday, state police said.

    Valentin Montoya, 69, was pronounced dead at the site of the accident, state police Lt. Craig Martin said. The crash happened shortly before 10 a.m.

    Montoya was headed south on U.S. Highway 84, 21 miles south of Interstate 25, when he lost control of his car because of the icy road, Martin said. Montoya struck a car going north on the highway.

  • EDITORIAL: A community's coorespondent

    Last week, we lost a valuable colleague in Ricky DeHerrera, the Optic’s Mora County correspondent for 37 years. He died last week at the too-young age of 65.

    His work for this newspaper kept us in touch with current events in Mora, but more than that, his dedication to his community and the Optic brings back memories of how things used to be.
