  • No need to travel far - Morphy Lake fishing looks good

    With the water level at Storrie Lake dropping with each passing day and no end in sight, Las Vegas area anglers might have to look elsewhere to find any decent fishing this season.

    They won’t have to go too far, as Morphy Lake is just up the road in the cool pines above Mora where there’s still a decent supply of water and the fishing has been great of late.

  • Balderas running for attorney general

    SANTA FE — State Auditor Hector Balderas announced Tuesday he’s running for the Democratic nomination for attorney general next year.

    Balderas’ campaign sent out email announcements to political supporters, saying he would bring a “watchdog mentality” to the New Mexico attorney general’s office.

    Casa de Cultura’s second annual Cinco de Mayo celebration will take place from noon to 5 p.m. this Saturday at Mural Park, Seventh and Douglas. There will be mariachis, Aztec dancers, youth musical talent, speakers, food, vendors, blues music and the Veterans Honor Guard. Free and open to the public

  • FYI - May 3, 2013

    New Mexico State Police are planning two DWI checkpoints in this area today and Saturday. The first will take place between 5 and 10 p.m. on Friday in San Miguel County. The second is planned for between 2 and 5 p.m. on Saturday in Mora County.

  • Recreation center to host Teen Dance tonight

    Teens from Las Vegas and the surrounding areas will have the opportunity to mingle and dance with their same-aged peers this evening.

    From 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday at the Abe Montoya Recreation Center a Cinco de Mayo Teen Dance will be held as part of an effort to provide additional activities for the youth in the area.

    Lucas Sanchez, a youth coordinator at the center, said he hopes the dance will bring in students from the surrounding areas as well. He said the center invited teens from Wagon Mound, Springer, Mora, Pecos and Las Vegas to the dance.
