  • Palabras Pintorescas: Never run out of stories

My fellow columnist, Art Trujillo, recently asked me if I ever ran out of ideas, stories I can write about. Obviously, the answer is “no” because things just pop up in my life and that reminds me of yet another tall tale or story.

  • Most local races will be decided June 3

Democrats and Republicans throughout the state will head to the polls on June 3 to select their candidates for the General Election in November.

But in San Miguel County, where 71 percent of registered voters are Democrats, primary elections have historically taken on added significance, and that’s certainly the case this year.

The only Republican who filed in a local race is Magistrate Judge Eddy M. Gallegos, who is hoping to hold on to the Division 1 magistrate seat that Gov. Susana Martinez appointed him to last year.

  • Meet the San Miguel County candidates

Editor’s note: With the primary election set for June 3, it’s time to brush up on the candidates. The Optic submitted questionnaires to all San Miguel County candidates in contested races. What follows are their responses. There are no local contested races in the Republican primary, so the following candidates are all Democrats. A Q&A on the Mora County candidates will be published next week.

Anyone who knows Gene Parson knows he is all about the green and gold of West Las Vegas schools. Parson will continue leading his school district for at least two more years as superintendent. He has been awarded a two-year contract and a $15,000 salary increase by the school board.

“They saw fit that I get a little more,” Parson said in a recent interview. “Hopefully it will make up for all the stress” (that comes with being superintendent.)

  • Altercation leads to stabbing

A 19-year-old Las Vegas man was arrested Friday after he allegedly stabbed another man during an altercation at the river walk near Bridge Street.

Las Vegas police filed paperwork in San Miguel County Magistrate Court on Monday charging him  with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, a third-degree felony.
