  • For Fabian - Saturday event memorializes coach

    Teaching was his vocation.

    Basketball was his love.

    Distance running was his passion.

    Fabian Trujillo made a career of coaching both hoops and cross country in addition to his day job as a classroom teacher, and in each of the three venues, he delighted in making an impact on young lives.

    On Saturday, he’ll have another chance to continue that work.

  • Isotopes offense sputters

    After the Isotopes bats made all kinds of noise to open the series, those sticks fell silent for the last two games against the Round Rock Express.

    Albuquerque slipped to 37-30 after a 5-2 loss Wednesday at Isotopes Park.

    The Express (29-38) outhit Albuquerque 15 to 7 on Wednesday, winning the second straight after a 9-2 verdict on Tuesday.

    Fernando Nieve (3-4) gave up four runs — three earned — on 10 hits in six innings of work, striking out five.

  • Cain perfect for Giants

    SAN FRANCISCO — Matt Cain pitched the 22nd perfect game in major league history and first for the Giants, striking out a career-high 14 and getting help from two spectacular catches to beat the Houston Astros 10-0 on Wednesday night.

    Cain’s 125-pitch masterpiece for San Francisco featured a pair of great plays by his corner outfielders. He got pinch-hitter Jason Castro on a grounder to third for his 27th and final out with the sellout crowd of 42,298 roaring.

    Charles Martinez, a 1997 graduate of Robertson High School, has been selected as one of the 2012 100 Extra Ordinary Nurses in the Washington Metropolitan Area.

    The nurses were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the nursing profession and the community.

    Martinez was nominated by Dr. Carolyn Harris for his compassion, clinical expertise and extraordinary care. Recipients of this award are recognized as outstanding role models in the nursing community.
