  • Two incumbents win, another loses

    Voters on the east side kept one incumbent on the school board in Tuesday’s election, while they threw out another.

    On the west side, one incumbent trounced three rivals, while a fresh face in politics prevailed with a comfortable margin.

    For East’s Position 1, political newcomer Gabriel Lucero won in a landslide with 50.4 percent over longtime incumbent Philip Leger (32 percent) and former Las Vegas Mayor Matt Martinez (17.6 percent).

    I would like to thank all the SAM-FM listeners who contributed to this year’s annual holiday turkey drive.

    This was the seventh year for the turkey drive and again people reached deep down to help their neighbors. Because of your generosity, I was able to get turkeys for the Samaritan House, Victory Home Health, the Soup Kitchen, the Knights of Columbus, St. Vincent de Paul, the I.C. Church and even some for Santa Claus. They were all extremely grateful for the donations and I also thank them for their devoted service to our community all year round.

  • Councilor Madrid needs to lead

    Councilor Morris Madrid, I agree something should have been done about the $1.2 million months ago. Why did you not put the item on the agenda or call a study session or take any positive action?  Are you a victim of the process?

    Councilors take leadership for their community or they add nothing to the process.

    (Mayor) Tony (Marquez) may be the captain, but all councilors are the first mates!

    SANTA FE — Ever since legislative bodies were created, observers, ranging from philosophers to comedians, have showered us with cynical assessments of these bodies.

    Somehow legislatures and Congress always are the easiest to dislike and demean. Their popularity rating always is lowest. Governors and presidents can charm their way along but legislative bodies have no personality. Constituents often like their own legislator but dislike all the rest.

  • EDITORIAL: Still waiting

    In today’s newspaper, we have yet another story about Gilberto Reyes, who has been in jail for 13 months without his day in court. His trial is set for late February. We don’t know about his guilt or innocence, but we know he hasn’t enjoyed his constitutional right to a speedy trial. It would be nice if the justice system would take care of this matter.

  • RHS principal on leave

    Richard Lopez, principal of Robertson High School, was placed on paid administrative leave Monday, officials said.

    Las Vegas City Schools Superintendent Rick Romero said he made the decision, but he wouldn’t reveal the reasons, saying it was a personnel matter.

    Lopez became assistant principal and athletic director in 1999 and was promoted to principal in 2001.

  • Council to decide Du Four’s future

    It’s pretty clear that Mayor Tony Marquez wants to get rid of Utilities Director George Du Four.

    Now, all he needs is a city manager who will make such a recommendation.

    Late last month, Marquez placed Du Four on unpaid leave until Wednesday’s City Council meeting, in which members would decide the director’s fate.

    But the city charter requires that a dismissal or appointment of a director be on the recommendation of the city manager.

  • Five vying to become manager

    The city is looking at five candidates for city manager, a position the mayor is hoping to fill quickly.

    Las Vegas resident Barbara Perea Casey, a former superintendent of West Las Vegas schools, had been on the list but she withdrew.  There are no local residents among the finalists.

    The Mercer Group Inc., a nationwide recruiting firm, presented the names of the finalists to Mayor Tony Marquez over the weekend. The mayor has said he wants a candidate with municipal government experience, which the five remaining finalists have.
