  • Rough Riders walk off winners in home debut

    Isaiah Dominguez rocked a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning Thursday, boosting the Luna Community College Rough Riders to a 10-7 victory over Frank Phillips College in their home debut.

    Luna had to rally from a 7-4 deficit going into the bottom of the seventh, the last at-bats for the Rough Riders. But they manufactured three runs to force extra innings, and after shutting down FPC in the top of the eighth, the Riders went to work.

    UP thumb ... TWO NEW FACES. Congratulations to the winners of the East and West school board elections — Elaine Luna, Gabe Lucero on the east side and Christine Ludi and David Romero on the west side. Lucero defeated incumbent Philip Leger and former mayor Matt Martinez to become the City Schools district’s newest board member, while David Romero won the open seat being vacated by Ralph Garcia, who chose not to seek re-election. Luna and Ludi retained their positions in re-election bids.

  • Principal, teacher face sex allegations

    A former Robertson High School student is alleging that a teacher sexually abused her for five years, and a woman is accusing Robertson Principal Rick Lopez of harassing her when she was applying for a job.

    Santa Fe attorney Merit Bennett is representing the alleged victims in the matters involving the alleged misconduct of Principal Rick Lopez and teacher Jay Quintana.

    City Schools Superintendent Rick Romero said Thursday that he has referred the cases to the Las Vegas Police Department.

    It would have been the perfect moment to recall Donald Rumsfeld’s famous quote: “There are known knowns. These are things that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don’t know. But there are also unknown unknowns.   • Grizzly grapplers nip Highlands

    New Mexico Highlands’ wrestling team won four of 10 matches Thursday night and fell one maneuver short of another against a solid Adams State squad.

    The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual meet was only the second home event of the season for NMHU and one of only four overall to be held at the Wilson Complex.

    Coach Doug Moses’ Cowboys  (3-9-1, 1-4-1 RMAC) host Chadron State (6-3, 3-0) on Friday night at 7. After that, the last chance to see the NMHU grapplers in Las Vegas will be Feb. 14, when Colorado State-Pueblo comes to town.

  • LETTER: Work together for a safer crossing

    In response to Mr. Paul Gray, engineer for the New Mexico Department of Transportation, published Jan. 16-18 in the Optic (“Another killed in train wreck”): your assumption will not bring back the two people who got killed. This is called passing the buck. I don‘t have an engineering degree, but I don’t believe it’s the City of Las Vegas’ responsibility. There are two roads that access this crossing: one is Rio Arriba and the other is Aragon Road. The crossing provides access to either road; these are state or county roads.

  • Cowboys take lead in RMAC West

    Guess who’s No. 1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference West men’s basketball race?

    Under coach Joe Harge, the Cowboys are 15-5 overall and 9-3 in the RMAC, rivaling the better starts the team made two decades ago under then-coach Henry Sanchez.

    The latest triumph came Tuesday night, a 90-67 rout of Colorado State-Pueblo (9-11, 6-6).

    A 23-3 Cowboy run midway through the first half turned a one-point deficit into a 39-20 lead. Highlands held on to that lead, which reached a 20-point margin — 53-33 — by halftime.

  • BREAKING NEWS: Teacher, principal on leave because of alleged sexual misconduct, official says

    Las Vegas City Schools Superintendent Rick Romero confirmed Thursday that he made the decisions to put a principal and a teacher on leave because of allegations of sexual misconduct.

    Romero also said he turned the cases over to the Las Vegas Police Department, which will conduct its own investigations into the charges.

    "It's not our place to determine what's criminal and what's not. That's law enforcement's job," Romero said. "We're taking this seriously."

  • Luna CC baseball, softball home openers this week

    Luna Community College’s softball and baseball teams will open up their home season at noon on Friday at the city’s La Plaza Fields.

    The softball team will be making its debut, while the baseball team is in its fourth year and following its winningest season to date. Both squads will take on Frank Phillips College of Borger, Texas.

    LCC President Pete Campos along with Vice President of Instruction Vidal Martinez are scheduled to throw the ceremonial first pitch.
