Utilities Director George Du Four’s car broke down on the way from Albuquerque, so he couldn’t make it to Wednesday’s City Council to argue against his firing.

A councilman supporting Du Four pleaded for a delay — to no avail. By a 3-2 vote, the council fired the director.

After a week and a half of secrecy, Mayor Tony Marquez finally revealed the reason why he wanted to let Du Four go: He contended the director had adjusted customer accounts in violation of city ordinance.

No details were given.

Public officials should be held accountable, and that includes Las Vegas Mayor Tony Marquez.        Before last year’s election, we endorsed his candidacy for mayor, expecting him to be a breath of fresh air at City Hall. We supported his vision of transparency and accountability — and still do.

But we have come to disagree with how he has tried to carry out that vision. He has brought great instability to city government, and that has high costs for our community.

Robertson’s boys’ basketball team hosts West Las Vegas this evening at Mike Marr Gym. Action tips off with the freshman game at 4 p.m., followed by the junior varsity and varsity, the latter tipping off sometime after 7.

The Cardinals, coached by David Bustos, are 5-14 overall and 1-3 in District 2-3A. Most recently, the Cards lost 76-59 to Santa Fe Indian.

The Dons and Morgan Montaño are 12-8 and 2-2 coming off a 58-46 loss at St. Mike’s.

Robertson’s wrestling team, missing grapplers at several weight classes, earned an 11th place finish in this past weekend’s annual Cardinal Classic, which brought 21 out-of-town schools to town for the two-day event.

The host Cardinals amassed 163.5 team points, getting edged out by Hobbs (173) and Santa Fe High (167) on the second day. West Las Vegas finshed 14th in the 24-team affair with 111.5 team points. The RHS junior varsity took 17th with 81 points, and Pecos was 20th with 43.
