  • Message sent against underage drinking

    Regular customers of Allsup’s convenience store at Grand Avenue and Alamo Street may have been understandably confused by all the commotion at the store last Thursday morning.

    After all, the small parking lot was jam-packed and a couple of dozen people stood in the aisles on one side of the store. They included dignitaries such as San Miguel County Sheriff Benjie Vigil, San Miguel County DWI Prevention Coordinator Wendy Armijo and a number of state officials. They were on hand for the start of a new anti-underage drinking program.

  • Cowboys split with No. 2 team in nation

    Snuffing out an eighth-inning rally just in time, the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys nipped Mesa State 11-10 on Sunday to secure a split of their four-game weekend series.

    As close as it was, it was a quality win for the Cowboys (33-16, 23-10 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference). Mesa State is ranked second in NCAA Division II baseball, first in the Central region, and is the heavy favorite to win the RMAC. And the Mavericks had beaten NMHU five straight games before the Cowboys split a Saturday doubleheader.

  • BREAKING NEWS: Cards, Dons both statebound in baseball?

     

     

    Seeding announcements were made Sunday by the New Mexico Activities Association.

     

    Baseball teams from Robertson and West Las Vegas are going to the state tournament.

    But the young Cardinals and Dons, who showed marked improvement this season, have difficult first-round matchups waiting after finishing fourth and fifth, respectively, in District 2-3A.

  • Mexican students to return home soon

    Mexican students at Highlands University will be returning home sooner than expected because officials expect the border to be closed in response to swine flu fears.

    “We are receiving information from the state Department of Public Health in terms of what they’re doing, and our health providers on campus are in direct contact with the state and will be following whatever guidelines that may be appropriate. So we are certainly monitoring the situation very carefully,” Highlands President Jim Fries said.

  • Vegas police find murder suspect

    Las Vegas police late Tuesday night apprehended a woman accused in the death of a local man.

    Bernadette Sanchez, 36, a former Watrous resident who was more recently homeless in Las Vegas, is charged in the stabbing to death Timoteo M. Jaramillo, 36, of Las Vegas, police said.

    On Tuesday night, Las Vegas police received a call of an intoxicated woman down at Lopez and Rio Arriba streets, Police Chief Gary Gold said. The woman was identified as Sanchez, who was taken to the hospital and then expected to be taken to the county jail.

  • Highlands planning for student center

    Highlands University took formal action to erect a new student center, and officials say they’ll seek student input.

    Last week, Highlands University hosted a community meeting to get public input on preliminary concepts for updating the campus master plan as well as building the new student center.

    “It’s a delight to have you here, whether you’re from the college community or the community at large. What we have to talk about this evening has long-term significance for all of us,” President Jim Fries told the large audience.

  • EDITORIAL: Credible change

    Today marks the big 1-0-0 for President Barack Obama, and it’s been an impressive start. Not since Franklin D. Roosevelt, whose administration coined the term “first hundred days” have we seen anyone so aggressively changing things. Part of it is that Obama is following a terrible presidency, so cleaning up the mess as quickly as possible is tantamount. But it’s also because Obama knows he rode a wave of change — the time is right for a new national direction, and Obama recognizes that.

  • City seeking home rule

    The city of Las Vegas is looking for a few good Republicans. Or independents or Greens.

    That’s because members of the City Council want to re-create its Charter Commission, which was formed a couple of months ago to make changes to the 39-year-old city charter, Las Vegas’ founding document. The city wants the commission to begin the process for Las Vegas’ home rule, and under state law, such a commission can’t have more than a simple majority of members of one political party.

  • COLUMN: A peevish punctuation mark

    Perhaps no mark of punctuation — this one among the smallest in the English language — has caused more grief. It’s misuse appears to be what its best noted for.

    Let me explain:

    The apostrophe (‘), that little cosa that few people are able to master, more than anything else, has caused English teachers to turn in their chalk prematurely and declare, “never again.”

  • 3 rapes reported in Vegas

    Three rapes have been reported in Las Vegas in recent days, but state police are giving few details about the alleged attacks.

    “There is no reason to believe they are linked together. Having three reported one right after another is strange in a town the size of Las Vegas,” state police Lt. Miguel Aguilar said. “We haven’t identified who the suspects are.”
