    Now it’s time for the big dogs to take over the NCAA tournament.

    Fourteen of the 16 teams remaining in the bracket are from major conferences, leaving scrappy Ohio and Xavier as the only mid-majors with a shot at following up on what Butler and Virginia Commonwealth did a year ago.

    Good news, even for you underdog fans, is that the resumes of the 14 big-school programs include 93 Final Four appearances and 33 national titles.

  • Mora County Notebook: Residents receive Medals of Valor

    The Mora County Commission meeting last Tuesday was the scene of a special presentation of Medals of Valor and good citizenship, given by Lucas Duran and a representative from the Ledoux, Monte Aplanado, El Carmen Fire Department. Those receiving the awards were: Cindy Aragon, Angelica Aragon, Marcos Mondragon and Alonzo Aragon.

    Well, what do you know ... I have now written about 300 columns, plus or minus, and I thought I could paint a word picture of sorts. That was before I was invited to our Rio Gallinas Charter School to share some history with their fifth- and sixth- grade students. They can paint great word pictures, too!

  • Los Niños PTA going strong

    Some 40 people were there last September, teachers, students, parents, and the school principal. The Los Niños PTA meeting was managed well, but most notable was the active interchange between parents and the principal, David Baca.

    Parents made known their expectations and concerns, and the administration did the same. Both “educated” each other, and left the meeting with an understanding of common goals and actions to be taken.

    Luna Community College’s Culinary Arts instructor chef Adrienne O’Brien recently completed requirements to become a Certified Culinary Educator.

    O’Brien is part of a small group of individuals from New Mexico with this type of certification.

    The Viles Scholarship Foundation is accepting scholarship applications for the 2012-2013 academic school year. The Viles Foundation awarded more than $85,000 in scholarship assistance for the 2011-2012 academic year.
