    Zig Zigler used to tell the story of a man in Alaska who had two dogs, a black one and a white one. Each week he would take his dogs to town and they would fight against each other. The locals would gamble by betting which dog they thought would win the battle that week and then make or lose money accordingly. Some nights the black dog would win and other nights the white one would succeed.

  • Close calls in Nebraska

    A late turnover by Chadron State helped the Highlands Cowboys hang on to an 85-82 squeaker Friday night in Chadron, Neb.

    Mannie Cass and Stargell Love both posted double-doubles for Highlands. Cass dropped 15 points on the Eagles to go with a team-best 10 rebounds. Love had a full stat line, tallying a game-high 18 points and 10 assists, plus five boards and three assists.

  • Cowboy wrestlers split duals

    New Mexico Highlands’ wrestling team split a pair of road dual meets to close this past week.

    The Cowboys lost 30-9 at Chadron State on Thursday in Nebraska, with Erick Rangel (125 lbs.), Easton Hargrave (174) and Justin Rockhill (197) all winning by decision.

    NMHU rebounded the following night, beating Colorado School of Mines 34-12 in Golden, Colo.

    Hargrave, Cody Marquez (285) and Tre Humphrey (133) pinned their opponents to highlight the dual win.

  • Aggies fall in Chi-Town

    CHICAGO  — Clarke Rosenberg scored 20 points and Quinton Pippen added 19 with eight rebounds as Chicago State defeated New Mexico State 86-81 Thursday night.

    The Cougars (8-9, 3-0 WAC) shot 54.9 percent from the field and were 8 of 12 from beyond the arc. Matt Ross scored 17 points, Nate Duhon contributed 12 and Corey Gray had 10 for Chicago State.

  • Board may ask Campos to stay

    A Luna Community College trustee who has been one of President Pete Campos’ fiercest critics inquired at a meeting Monday whether the board could have the option of continuing with Campos at the school’s helm a while longer.

    “Can we have the option to bring the president back,” Trustee Ernie Chavez asked at the board of trustees work session.
