  • East to end year in black

    Las Vegas City Schools should end this fiscal year in the black, Superintendent Sheryl McNellis-Martinez informed the district’s audit committee on Thursday afternoon.

  • Co-op customers to get $1M

    Members of the Mora-San Miguel Electric Cooperative are in line to receive more than $1 million in refunds from the co-op, thanks to a Feb. 28 board decision.

    Co-op General Manager Abran Romero said the co-op plans to mail out just under 8,000 capital credit retirement checks on Tuesday. The largest check will be for $87,000 and will go to the Glorieta conference center, which has historically been the co-op’s largest electric customers.

  • Prescribed burn planned at refuge

    The Las Vegas National Wildlife Refuge plans to implement a prescribed fire project on the east side of the refuge in early May.

    The burn unit is located southeast of the refuge headquarters 3 miles southeast of Las Vegas.

    This prescribed fire is part of a fuels reduction and grassland maintenance project on the refuge to enhance native habitat for a variety of wildlife species.

    The city of Las Vegas is scheduled to hold a daylong budget hearing today, April 30, at City Hall, 1700 N. Grand Avenue. The hearing is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. with a presentation by the city manager and finance director of the preliminary fiscal year 2013 budget.

    West teacher remains on leave
    A 17-year veteran of the West Las Vegas School district remains on paid administrative leave.

    West Las Vegas Superintendent Ruben Cordova put Frank Herrera on leave on Feb. 17 due to a pending investigation by the local city police. Authorities have yet to disclose what exactly is being investigated.
