  • The Greatest Gift - Coach’s generosity saved lives

    Fabian Trujillo dedicated his life to helping others, and even after death his legacy lives on. Trujillo’s floragraph will ride along a Donate Life float in the 124th annual Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif., on New Year’s Day.

    Trujillo’s children and other relatives will also be helping create the float and participate in various events while in California. According to Trujillo’s sister-in-law, Debbie Trujillo, two deceased individuals from New Mexico will have their floragraph displayed along with 72 other such memorials.

  • County cell phone policy approved

    San Miguel County employees are no longer allowed to use cell phones while driving during working hours under an administrative policy approved by the San Miguel County Commission this month.

    Many municipalities, including the city of Las Vegas, already have ordinances making it illegal to use a cell phone while driving for all motorists, unless the driver has a hands-free device. San Miguel County’s new policy, however, takes it a step further, even prohibiting its employees from using cell phones with hands-free devices while driving.

  • Teen dies in crash

    A Wagon Mound High School student lost her life in a car crash Wednesday afternoon, the Mora County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed.

    Brandilyn Vigil, 15, a resident of Mora, died at the scene of the accident near Ocate. Sheriff Thomas Garza said his department is still investigating the crash.

    Hiking fees being waived
    SANTA FE — New Mexico State Parks will be waiving fees at several parks on New Year’s Day and offering guided hikes as part of a national initiative to get people to start 2013 outdoors.
    The so-called First Day Hikes will be offered at Bottomless Lakes, Leasburg Dam, City of Rocks and Rockhound parks in southern New Mexico.
    Cerrillos Hills State Park near Santa Fe and Sugarite Canyon State Park in northeastern New Mexico will also be waiving fees and offering New Year’s Day hikes.
