  • Hanukkah and heritage

Hanukkah, which began Saturday night and lasts through Sunday, may not be the dominant December holiday in New Mexico; it is still celebrated by many and serves as a reminder that Jews have played an important role in New Mexico, and especially here in Las Vegas.

  • Editor's Note - Throwing a pity party

Think I’ll throw myself a pity party.  I caught a cold, I’m overworked, I’m gaining weight from my comfort food and I have no company to enjoy my misery with, so I’m in good shape to invite you in as I feel sorry for myself.

Join me as I lay out some of the reasons why my life sucks:

  • Lopez’s foul shots lift Cowgirls

Her nickname is “The Silent Assassin,” but Alyssa Lopez was anything but quiet in crunch time on Friday night in Gunnison, Colo.

Lopez snagged a defensive rebound, drew a foul, then sank two free throws in the closing seconds to lift New Mexico Highlands’ women to a 67-65 triumph at Western State Colorado.

She finished with a team-high 15 points to go with seven rebounds, three assists and a steal in 37 minutes of work. She was a perfect 8 for 8 at the charity stripe, offsetting a difficult night from the floor (3-for-13 shooting).

  • Rangers outgun Dons

With Mora and West Las Vegas crowding into Gillie Lopez Gym on Friday night, the facility was stacked with green.

And the Rangers duo of Cody Najar and Lorenzo Chavez was money.

The Mora wings accounted for a combined 61 points as the Rangers topped WLV 83-74.

Mora, ranked fourth among Class 2A boys’ teams, improved to 3-1; West, ninth in 3A, fell to 2-1.

  • Bradley beats buzzer, boosts ‘Birds

Abbey Bradley swished a game-winning basket to beat the final buzzer on Thursday, leading the Robertson Lady Cardinals to a 50-49 squeaker over Hartley (Texas).

The win came in the first round of a three-day tournament in Clayton and it was the season opener for RHS and head coach Rick Armijo.

Bradley led Robertson with 16 points, and Chantel Sena had 13.
