  • Frankie to meet Johnny again

    After plenty of anticipation and more than a year of delays, the third fight between former world champion Johnny Tapia and Las Vegas’ own Frankie Archuleta is finally a go — we think.

    Tapia-Archuleta III is set as the 10-round main event of a June 4 boxing card at the Hard Rock Casino in Albuquerque.

    Tickets range from $25 to $200 and are available via the casino’s box office and online.

  • State tennis opens

    Robertson opened the state tennis tournaments Wednesday in Albuquerque with victories in boys’ doubles (Nick Newman and Henry Robertson) and girls’ doubles (Elise Almendarez and Gia LaFerriere).

    Individual brackets wrap up Friday; team play concludes Saturday.

  • Youth racquetball camp slated for June 4 at rec

    The City of Las Vegas recreation department is sponsoring a junior racquetball camp for youngsters ages 8-15 on June 4 at the Abe Montoya Recreation Center.

    Cost for the camp is $15. Registration forms are available at the rec center and are due by Friday, May 27.

    “We are pleased to have Ron Maestas as the head instructor for the camp. Mr. Maestas is a four-time national racquetball champion and a retired NMHU instructor,” said Misty Ward, coordinator. “Come join the fun and learn the game!”

    City of Las Vegas presents Spring Road Running: Spring Running is a fun program designed to teach the basics of running. Recreation staff will provide instruction which includes stretching exercises, running techniques, running games, timed races and cool down techniques. This five-week program will let you kick up your heels and shake off the winter cobwebs. Participants will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. through May 26 at the Abe Montoya Recreation Center.

    Luna Community College students Crystal Rae Martinez and Earl Varela brought home gold medals from the state SkillsUSA competition held in Albuquerque last month.

    Martinez, a senior cosmetology student from Las Vegas, wowed the judges depicting the cast of the heavy rock group KISS on the nails of her model Victoria Perea. Martinez competed in nail care.
