  • Democrat takes case to state level

    Ambrose Castellano, who lost in his bid to become the chairman of the San Miguel County Democratic Party, is challenging the election’s procedures at the state level.

    Earlier this month, Martin Suazo, the chairman for the last eight years, won another two-year term at the county convention, getting 84 votes to Castellano’s 10.

    During the convention, Castellano and former Chairman Greg Salazar, whom Suazo beat eight years ago, both called into question the credentials of some delegates.

  • Las Vegas call center to close

    One of Las Vegas’ two call centers plans to close its doors at the end of the month, putting 48 people out of work.

    Vertex officials have announced that they plan to shut down the center, which is based at Highlands University, because of the loss of the center’s only client, Duke Energy.

    Vertex spokeswoman Diane Webb said the center will close April 30, but a team of managers will remain into May to move out.

  • COLUMN: Riverwalk is an overall plus

    A couple of weeks ago, I attended a more than two hour meeting on a proposed pedestrian-bicyclist path along Cinder Road. Backers touted it as a desirable extension of the riverwalk here in town.

    However, opponents claimed that the riverwalk is poorly maintained and that Cinder Road residents should expect the same thing.

    Up to that point, I had never walked or run on the entire length of the riverwalk. I have chosen other places for exercise over the years, including the tracks at Robertson High School and Highlands University.

  • Truant student faces DWI charge

    A reportedly truant Robertson High School student is accused of crashing her car after smoking marijuana, city police said.

    Last month, the 18-year-old girl was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and causing great bodily injury by vehicle.

    According to a criminal complaint filed in Magistrate Court, a police officer was on patrol when he noticed an accident at Sixth and Washington streets shortly after 11 a.m. March 12.

    On April 2, Steve Medina, the city’s wastewater utility supervisor, pleaded guilty to a petty misdemeanor charge of embezzlement. He admitted to having a city employee work on Medina’s personal vehicle on city time.

  • Good week on the diamond for LV prep teams

    Defending the home turf against quality district opponents apparently was a shared priority for Las Vegas’ prep baseball and softball teams on Tuesday.

    Robertson defeated Pojoaque 8-7 in baseball and 16-6 in softball. Meanwhile, West Las Vegas knocked off Santa Fe Indian 8-1 in baseball and 9-8 in softball.

  • LV baseball district hopes dealt a blow

    Don and Cardinal hopes of earning a district baseball championship suffered a setback Monday as both local teams lost doubleheaders to fellow contenders.

    Raton swept host West Las Vegas 11-9 and 7-4; Robertson lost two at St. Michael’s 17-2 and 8-7. Both twinbills were makeup games from weather cancellations.

  • Rec center addresses suggestions

    The city’s recreation center is making progress in addressing recommendations made by a citizens advisory panel last year.

    The center’s director, Loretta Abreu Martin, who has been on the job for only a few weeks, gave the City Council an update on how the center is responding to the panel’s suggestions.

    “We have addressed every item,” she said. “I met with the task force, and they were pleased.”

  • Some question Campos’ Senate certificates

    In March, some residents got certificates of appreciation from the state Senate for their support of a recent proposed tax increase to pay for building projects at Luna Community College.

    More specifically, the certificates were signed by Sen. Pete Campos, D-Las Vegas, who also happens to be the college’s president.

    Now, some are criticizing Campos for using the state Senate to help him with his full-time job at Luna.

    Campos said he uses certificates to recognize people for their “positive involvement in a myriad of worthy events.”
