    With all the heat that police officers are taking lately, I’m thinking it’s a good time to bring up a related topic — the politics that infiltrates police departments everywhere.

  • Movie script offensive

    An Adam Sandler movie being shot in Las Vegas and other parts of New Mexico is stirring controversy over its portrayal of American Indians.

    Several American Indian actors walked off the set of “The Ridiculous Six” on Wednesday night, complaining about stereotypes, offensive names and scenes they say disrespect Native American religious practices.

    Shanice McPherson of the No. 4 nationally ranked New Mexico Highlands track and field team was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Female Field Athlete of the Week on Wednesday, April 22.

    At the Mount Sacramento Relays this past weekend in Walnut, Calif., McPherson began her competition April 17 running a leg of the 400-meter relay. She improved the Highlands relay time to 45.76, which is third-best in the nation and leading the RMAC.

    The New Mexico Highlands football team, under the direction of first-year head coach Jeff Mills, has announced its 2015 schedule.

  • Adult softball on its way

    Men’s and women’s adult softball season is rapidly approaching, and the Abe Montoya Recreation Center Recreation Department announced deadlines this week.

    Deadline to submit rosters is May 18, and league play begins on May 25.

    Costs include a $400 fee and $10 player fee.

    A mandatory meeting for coaches and managers is set for this week, 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Rec.

    The league is also seeking umpires. Certifications through the USSSA are required; a clinic will be scheduled if needed.

  • West to hold athletics forum

    There will be a voluntary parent meeting parents or concerned fans of West Las Vegas athletics at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5, at the Gillie Lopez Gymnasium.

    The meeting is designed to listen to concerns parents may have about West Las Vegas athletic programs, according to athletic coordinator Richard Tripp.

    “We will also discuss items for upcoming 2015-16 school year parents can address over the summer,” he said. “This will not be a meeting to discuss coaches’ hirings and firings.”

  • Woods to play in TPC tourney

    PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla.  — Tiger Woods has added The Players Championship to his schedule, another indication that he is getting back to a normal golf season.

    Woods won The Players the last time he played in 2013. He missed last year while recovering from back surgery that forced him to miss a combined seven months in 2014. He sat out two months earlier this year to work on his game — particularly his chipping — after posting a career-high 82 in Phoenix.
