  • The ‘Cookie bookie’ and her hubby

    It’s hard to sum up everything Ray and Joyce Litherland have done during their lives.

    Married almost 60 years, the Las Vegas couple raised three children. All have successful careers. The youngest, Kenneth, was born deaf.

    They’ve traveled the world and treated each of their seven grandchildren to trips of their choice for their 13th birthdays.

  • City hires contractor for rec center

    The City Council voted unanimously this week to award a $4.23 million contract to an Española company to rehab the Abe Montoya Recreation Center. The city has also worked out a deal with New Mexico Highlands University that will give patrons of the rec center a place to work out while construction takes place.

    Tuesday’s vote by the Council represented a major breakthrough on the project. Just last week city officials were fretting over how to pay for the project because the lone contractor who bid on it came in significantly over budget.

  • Man wanted for firing semiautomatic rifle arrested

    Police have arrested the 19-year-old man accused of firing a semiautomatic rifle outside of Tequilas Bar earlier this month, as one of the victims in that incident spoke about the night she feared for her life and those of her children.
    Daniel Herrera, who resides on the 500 block of Mountain View, was arrested and booked into the San Miguel County Detention Center on Monday. He remained at the county jail as of Thursday.

  • Board didn’t know about special ed problems

    Las Vegas City Schools board president Leroy Lujan said this week that he and the other members of the board had not been apprised of the special education problems plaguing the district.

    Lujan said board members were blind-sided when they received a letter from the state Public Education Department in early May threatening to suspend the board and take over district operations if the problems weren’t immediately addressed.

    PHILADELPHIA — His own legacy on the line, President Barack Obama implored Americans to elect Hillary Clinton to the White House, casting her as a candidate who believes in the optimism that drives the nation’s democracy and warning against the “deeply pessimistic vision” of Republican Donald Trump.

  • French ID 2nd church attacker; police had warning about him

    PARIS — French officials on Thursday identified the second man who attacked a Normandy church during morning Mass, saying he’s a 19-year-old from eastern France who was spotted last month in Turkey as he supposedly headed to Syria — but who returned to France instead.

    Sapello man killed in motorcycle crash

    A 37-year-old Sapello man was killed in a motorcycle crash northeast of Mora, according to state police.

    A state police officer discovered the crash on NM 442 near mile marker 7 at about 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

    The deceased man has been identified as Angelo Martinez, of Sapello.
