  • LVCS board seeks members for audit committee

    The Board of Education for the Las Vegas City Schools is inviting parents of students attending the school district and members of the community who have experience in accounting or finance to serve on its audit committee.

    The audit committee reports directly to the board and shall be asked to fulfill the following responsibilities:

    • Evaluate the request for proposals for annual financial audit services;

    • Recommend the selection of the financial auditor;

  • NMHU students receive fellowships

    Two New Mexico Highlands University media arts students received $2,500 fellowships, thanks to the Seabury Foundation and a full match from the university’s foundation.

    Spring 2011 graduate Rianne Trujillo and junior Arianna Andreatta were tapped for the honor. They showcased their video projects May 12 at an awards presentation.  

  • Mora County Notebook: Joshua Garcia receives prestigious scholarship

    Joshua Garcia and six other northern New Mexico recipients were honored at a luncheon this month where they received the Pete Domenici Scholarship funded by Los Alamos National Laboratory.

    Garcia, son of John and Ann Garcia, is a 2011 graduate of Mora High School. At the luncheon recipients had a chance to sit and visit with Domenici.

    The students selected for the scholarship were chosen because of their outstanding academic achievement as well as outstanding leadership skills and community service.

  • A math wizard — Willie Sanchez

    A recent KFUN radio program that Jesus Lopez hosts had an old friend of mine as a guest. Willie Sanchez and I were students at New Mexico Highlands University together a long time ago.

    This was the early 1950s when our veterans from both World War II and the Korean conflict returned and went to school via the G.I. Bill. They came to get a good and useful education so they could move on with their lives. Some of us younger students didn’t have the same work and study habits they had. In other words, they came to get an education and they had little time to goof off.

  • ‘In spirit ... watching me’

    Most of the West Las Vegas High School seniors were beaming with joy during their graduation ceremony this past Saturday, but the day was bittersweet for Stacy Romero.

    Her father, Roy Ortiz, died in a car accident on May 1, the day after her senior prom.

    “I was expecting him to be at my graduation,” an emotional Romero said. After all, he had told her he would be there.

    On Saturday morning, as she and her classmates were receiving their diplomas in the packed Gillie Lopez gymnasium, Romero’s thoughts wandered to her father.
