  • Credit the road crews

It’s easy to take for granted the working men and women who keep the rest of us moving, but the crews that keep our highways and biways clear during bad winter weather deserve our recognition.

When snow and ice coat our roadways, city and state crews go to work. The Optic feature in our weekend edition, on the state Department of Transportation’s District 4 work crews, should serve as a reminder of just how valuable their work is to us all.

Is this “the beginning of the end” for Facebook?

According to an article by Ben Bajarin, director of consumer-technology analysis and research at Creative Strategies Inc., it just might be.

  • ‘Cardiac’ Cowboys win nailbiters

A buzzer-beating bucket by Billy Austin gave New Mexico Highlands Cowboys their second close-shave win in as many nights Saturday, an 81-79 squeaker vs. Colorado Mesa at the Wilson Complex.

The Cowboys had edged Western State 84-81 the previous evening.

“This was a great win for our team,” said NMHU head coach Joe Harge in a news release. “We had to fight through some adversity tonight, but came out on top. Our guys did an excellent job.”

Austin’s victory-sealing shot came as time expired in regulation and accounted for the last two of his team-high 22 points.

  • RHS girls 3rd in Santa Fe tourney

SANTA FE — Closing out opponents in the fourth quarter is quickly becoming a habit for the Robertson Lady Cardinals, who used a 12-point swing in the final period Saturday to defeat Taos 60-50 in the third-place game of the Capital City Invitational’s girls’ bracket.

“We had a real strong fourth quarter,” said RHS coach Rick Armijo. “Defensively, we really closed it out.”

Robertson trailed by two as the third quarter ended, but as has been the case of late, the Lady Cards turned it up a notch in clutch time.

Jamie Allen led RHS with 22 points and Kendra Montoya had 16.
