  • RHS principal Yara retires suddenly

    Robertson High School principal Mike Yara, announced his retirement effective the end of the school semester, Superintendent Kelt Cooper said Thursday.

    Cooper said reports that the principal was escorted out of the school and that he was fired are untrue, though Yara has been relieved of his duties with the district.

    “There’s a lot of talk in a small community,” he said. “People put a lot of spin on things.”

  • City Schools adopts security measures

    In response to the recent campus shooting in Florida and rumored threats against area schools, the Las Vegas City Schools Board of Education, by a unanimous vote, during its regular monthly meeting Thursday night, directed Superintendent Kelt Cooper to begin the process of implementing extra security measures.

    These new measures will be utilized at the greater Robertson High School campus, which includes Memorial Middle School.

    Weber, 31, will graduate from Luna Community College in May 2018, with an associate of science degree in general science.

  • Retiring Elmo

    Jan. 31 was “once in a super blue blood moon” for Elmo Baca.

    He referenced the epic once-in-a-lifetime lunar event in his thank you remarks, as well over one hundred co-workers, collaborators, dignitaries and dear friends gathered at La Fonda on the Plaza in Santa Fe to thank him for his years of service to New Mexico communities as he “retired” from his long association with New Mexico MainStreet.

  • Martial arts academy earns state honor

    A Las Vegas business was set to be recognized during the 2018 Legislative Session.

    Las Vegas Karate Academy was scheduled to be recognized as a Star Client of the New Mexico Small Business Development Center Network at La Fonda in Santa Fe. The annual reception recognizes businesses and entrepreneurs from across New Mexico who are seeing tremendous growth in their businesses.

    Las Vegas Karate Academy, a woman-owned business based in Las Vegas, specializes in martial arts training, with an emphasis on karate.

  • Supreme Court Justice Chavez to retire

    SANTA FE  — New Mexico Supreme Court Justice Edward Chavez will retire next month.

    The court announced Thursday that Chavez’s retirement will be effective March 9 and that a nominating committee will meet in April to interview applicants and recommend potential candidates to Gov. Susana Martinez.

    A New Mexico Highlands University biology professor will publish a research study that helps shed new light on better diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary hypertension.

    Jessica Snow co-authors the paper that will be published in the American Journal of Physiology.
