  • Lady Card spikers denied

    The postseason is over for Robertson and Mora volleyball teams, who lost Friday in the state volleyball tournaments at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho.

    Robertson (16-7) fell to a familiar nemesis — District 2-3A foe Pojoaque Valley, who  went on to win the Class 3A state title Saturday.

    The Elkettes, ranked No. 1  through much of the season, eliminated RHS 25-16, 25-17 and 26-24 in one of two Class 3A semifinals Friday night.

  • County wants oil and gas regulations

    San Miguel County is looking at a proposed moratorium on oil and gas drilling permits while it drafts regulations for such activities.

    No permits for oil and gas drilling are pending before the county. But County Commission Chairman David Salazar said he wants to make sure the county has sufficient rules in effect before companies come forward.

    The county has a general ordinance that deals with conditional land uses, but it doesn’t contain any regulations specifically designed for oil and gas drilling.

  • Man continues to fight law firm

    A Las Vegas resident who has sued a big Albuquerque law firm suffered a setback earlier this month, but he is not giving up.

    In October 2008, Joe Robert Encinias, a former Robertson High School student, filed a lawsuit against the Whitener Law Firm. That firm is led by Russ Whitener, who is famous for saying in his commercials, “Before you accept a check, check with me.”

  • Suspect: I'll 'finish off' bullets; victim's mother speaks out

    The man accused in the killing of another earlier this week wrote a day before on his MySpace account about how he wanted to “finish off” his ammunition.

    Rich-ard Baca, 21, a New Mexico National Guardsmen who was back from Iraq, is charged in the death of Benito Lemos, 22, in an apparent road-rage incident in central Las Vegas.

    The incident happened around 5:30 p.m. Monday.

  • Las Vegas YAFL teams at state this weekend

    At least in Las Vegas Young American Football League, the 49ers and Raiders are championship-caliber teams.

    The Niners — 6-0 and champs of the city’s junior division — and the Raiders, who won the senior division title by going 4-2, will play in the state YAFL tourney on Saturday and Sunday at Bullhead Park in Albuquerque.

  • County explains purchase of truck

    A top San Miguel County official says he understands why some people are wondering about the county’s new semi-truck, which has an extended sleeper cab.

    After all, trucks with such cabs are usually much more expensive.

    But in this case, County Manager Les Montoya said, the county went out to bid for a used truck and went with the lowest bidder, who just so happened to be selling a truck with a sleeper.

    The price tag was $49,846.

    “We don’t need a sleeper, but it was on the truck,” Montoya said.

  • Official says commitments should be honored

    A U.S. Army Blackhawk helicopter swept through the blue skies above a crowd of Las Vegans during Veterans Day services.

    David Salazar, a veteran and County Commission chairman, reminded the audience of sacrifices made by veterans.

    “I have had the opportunity to speak to a variety of audiences, but I have never spoken to an audience that represents those people who have given up more and done more for our country than American veterans. We all know or have heard of the men and women who went off to fight and never returned.”

  • Cards, Indians meet

    Robertson football coach Richard Martinez says he’s encouraged by what he’s seeing from his team at this point in the season but still wants it to improve week by week.

    The Cardinals open the Class 3A state playoffs as the No. 6 seed, hosting 11th seeded Cobre on Saturday; kickoff is 1:30 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium.
